why? whats the difference if you have the creativity and knowledge to take a product from Home Depot and make it look factory? Whats a "real lip" anyway? a piece of plastic/rubber molded and mended to fit the form and curve of the bumper right? well a Home Depot lip in that case is a "real lip" cause its exactly that..plastic/rubber formed and fitted to the factory shape and attached to the bumper..dont hate cause some people have the creativity to do things a bit differently and succeed at the overall outcome.

oh man, I thought I clicked on honda-tech but ended up here.
whats next, Lowes vinyl trim side shirts? Orchard Supply PVC intercooler piping? West Marine bilge pump "electric turbo"? Starbucks custom Coffee filter intake? The ghetto-rigging for these cars never ceases to amaze me, keep at it!
Its all good, I got my cardboard-fiber interior wood trim stained with pinesol. Gotta keep the ride smelling fresh for the ladies

This is only meant as a cheap and fast alternative, that looks decent for those with a pre 97 bumper.
If lowes had material to make a decent looking side skirt for cheap I would do it. If a starbucks cup actually worked as a intake and was proven to add HP I would do it. Who cares, if it works and serves its purpose.
Most of those mods you listed at the end wouldn't look nice or work as an addition if done. This lip however does the job.
Continue to think what you want, Im just speaking from the mindset of the people that want to try this, and keep them from being discouraged. If everyone thought this closed minded, I honestly think the world would of never progressed in area such as science.
Getting back to the lip. As someone mentioned above. What is the lip anyways? Just some plastic, formed over the bumper secured by screws. Same **** as this.
