Interesting (and much repeated) discussion. Can somebody clarify for me what octane ratings are in the US? I saw mention of 87 above - that seems extremely low. here in Oz, regular ULP is 91, premium is 95 and super premium is 98 (and a very big price hike). I ran my RX350 (2006) on 91 regular, but Lexus recommend 95 premium for the 450h so that's what I go with.
Cheers...jim

Some of which kind of makes my point. Exxon/Mobil are on the list of Top Tier fuels while BP/Amoco are not. There are also a number of other gas stations on the list of Top Tier stations I would never consider using. Top Tier is all about marketing and not about product. Keep in mind that much of this stuff is transmitted along the same pipelines and the only differences are the chemicals and detergents added at the last moment before it goes into the tanker trucks for delivery.
Best to just try various stations to see what your ride likes and stick with it if you can.

interesting response from Lexus Corporate re: fuel octane
Hi folks, I sent Lexus corporate an email re: fuel octane because some of the guys here said nothing has changed in the mapping of the ecu since they recommended premium a few years back. I said in my email; please dont tell me what you may think i want to hear. What octane fuel will my 2015 RX 350 perform the best on re; performance and fuel millage? their response simply said; "Premium" I thought I would share this with you.

I've always used premium in my '15.

well Joeb it got me wondering if using regular fuel now was nothing more than a marketing tool. and it appears that is all it is. so it continues to be if you want the best performance and fuel millage, use premium fuel.

I have 12 and I can't justify even a little bit running 93. I see no difference in milage and I bought it for the luxury ride and comfort. Gaining 3 hp is not going to make this an outlaw street racer.

It's a 4200 lb pig with a six cylinder.
Trying to extract 'performance' via octane levels seems futile to me.
The 24mpg on 87 octane @ 75-80mph highway seems acceptable.
I'd need a calculator and slide rule to do better.
