shortening the shifter stick?

Agreed, feels very flimsy as is for a luxury SUV. Would probably be better without the idiotic shift pattern. No need to have the weird pattern anymore with electronic shifters. BMW has this right with a center detent and a button to switch between different driving modes. Slap if to the left of center for manual mode. Piece of cake and probably would take up less space.

I did so on a 2010 Camry I owned. Rented a tap and die from Autozone to extend the threads on the shifter. Covered as much of the interior as I could with trash bags, and then shorted the shifter with a dremal.

I think cutting 1/2 inch off would be safe, however not sure if its worth the trouble..

For Autos, I found the shifter in the Prius to be the best. Same one is now in the electric RAV4. Now, that's a shifter I would like.

Careful of what you ask for. I come from the age of Dodge push button transmissions. Today, Chrysler brings us dial-a-gear. No gear shift at all -- just a big ****. The gear shift will go the way of the hand brake soon enough.

Funny how pretty innocuous designs freak people out. I've had our RX for almost three years and never thought once that it was 'too long' or 'too flimsy'. It's fine as far as I am concerned, if it drives you crazy go ahead and try to change it. I like the manual shift feature when going down winding twisting roads where you would be on the brakes constantly with a normal automatic transmissions. To each their own.

I think its perfectly fine the way it is. Its not like you hold onto it the whole time your in the car and when your driving. You only use it to switch gears and thats it.
