2013 RX350 iPod/Iphone USB Video Stream
Hello all,
Just recently bought a RX350 and playing around with the features. I noticed that when I connect my iPod through USB it gives me an option to select video on the screen. Is there a certain video format that can only be played in or does it only stream the movie with sound only?
Thanks for the help~

Thanks for raising this - I hadn't realised that video playback from the iPod was an option. However... all I'm getting is the sound track with a message saying "Video input not available". It also doesn't even see videos recorded on my phone. Need to do some digging in the manual and some experimenting.

OP, I just went out and tried my iPhone5 running iOS 6 in my 2013 with ML, and as I anticipated, no video when I'm in Park. I also scanned through both 2013 manuals with and without Nav as well as Lexus marketing materials and find no reference that says video should be supported via an iPod/iPad/iPhone. I did not research if it would be there for some quirky reason only with RSES in case you have that option on your vehicle. I can't explain why the interface shows the message about video, unless that some way enables additional sound types to be played, but I see no harm in saying yes as I think that's what I did last year when I brought my RX home and first plugged all my i-devices in. If this is a big deal for you, I suggest you contact your Lexus Technology Specialist at your dealership (every dealer has someone in sales with that title as of the past year or so) as they may know more or would certainly be a route to provide input back to Lexus on your desire.
FWIW, I also checked the manuals for my new 2014 MBZ that is arriving in the next couple of weeks which has their latest head unit (as our 2013 RXs do for Lexus), and it also says nothing about supporting video via it's iPod interface -- only via DVD when parked like our Lexus do, so the way video works does not seem to be unique to the Lexus iPod interface implementation.
Welcome to the forum, and enjoy that RX350!!!

FWIW, I had a few minutes while I was waiting for an appointment in my RX a little bit ago, so played with this video thing some more...
I have an iPod Classic hard-wired to my RX. Music works fine. There is a "VIDEO" selection box that shows at the bottom of the iPod screen where you can select playlists, etc. When selected, nothing dramatic happened for quite a while (I have nearly 800 albums and 100+ playlists), but eventually, a screen appeared showing the three music videos I have on that iPod -- a pop-up showed up briefly indicating I did not have the Video signal required for display and that only the music portion of those videos could be played (just as I suspected from my previous post). When I selected one of the videos to play, only the sound played -- similar to what happens if you try to play a DVD movie when you are not in park -- you only get the sound, not the visual.
So, in the end, it does not help the OP, as video is simply not available with the iPod interface, but I did confirm you can at least play the audio portion if you so desire.

Did you have the parking brake engaged? I'm not saying for sure it would still work but with all Lexus that is video capable, the parking brake has to be engaged as well as being in park.

I didn't. I'll let someone else pursue the detail if they like (as video in my vehicle isn't something I'll ever use or care about, except the one time after I took delivery to see what a DVD looked like for the @#$& of it when I was trying out all the new features I could think of. )

From the 2013 RX Owner's Manual:
For safety reasons, the DVD video discs can only be viewed when the following conditions are met:
(a) The vehicle is completely stopped.
(b) The “POWER” <“ENGINE START STOP”> switch is in ACCESSORY or ON <IGNITION ON> mode.
(c) The parking brake is applied.
While driving in DVD video mode, only the DVD’s audio can be heard.

Might assume the same might be true for other video sources.

Folks, rather than deal with more supposition, and to close this out, I just went out and tried it in my 98-degree garage. iPod Classic with Video, hardwired to 2013 RX450h with ML. In Park with Parking Brake engaged and engine running for good measure.
As stated above, I select video on the RX's iPod screen, and on the RX it then lists the videos on my iPod, along with a message on the left side there is no video A/V input, therefore only sound will be heard. When I select one of the videos to be played, only the sound comes on the speakers, no other change to the visual on the Nav screen. The interface acts as I thought back in post 3 & 4.
