MPG in the city
My wife's AWD RX has almost a year and 6K miles. In the city she doesnt get better than 13 MPG. With highway driving she gets around 21 MPG.
She is a very "light footed" driver so the MPG are even more disconserting. Are those numbers the norm with this car?
Lexus claims 18/24. Does anybody get that kind of numbers? When she took the car for the 5K service, the dealer sais that the numbers were "normal"...

About the half of my mileages is in Manhattan (upper west side, Mid-town, downtown, and upper east side). I got 13-16 MPG. If hitting the highways, I got about 21-27 MPG. My RX is about 20K+ now.

Cold engine = low mpg
If you only drive a short period / short distance each time, then the gas mileage won't be good - the engine has not warmed up yet. For those kind of driving, electric car will be ideal...

Mileage
I agree with this 100 percent. I think the transmission and engine combo in this car is geared more to the highway. Do most of you find that motor idles a little rough?

I currently have 800 miles on my RX. I took a trip of approx 300 miles last Monday, and averaged 27.4 mpg. Trip was mainly highway, except driving through 3 small towns, plus a stop at Ft Hood. Most of my driving is hwy, and I usually get in the 'slow' lane, drive 60, and get good mileage. If I speed up to 65 my gas mileage usually drops 2-3 mpg.

In my experience, if you are doing a lot of stop and go and sitting at traffic lights, you are really going to suffer. My old RX330 (also rated at 18/24) was getting around 12-13 when doing mostly city driving, and with careful footing, I was able to get 24 or better on the highway.
also, its not so much light footing, but being able to cruise without touching accelerator nor brake. you need to get up to speed however you can and then maintain it by watching road conditions and the cars around you. Try not to brake as much as possible.
this is partly why I got the hybrid this time around because I know I do a lot of stop and go

Our RX is mostly highway (22-24), but around town it drops noticeably like (17-19) at best. If it makes you feel any better I get 12 consistently in the city in my Cadillac, and that is on required premium.

I'd say give your engine a little more break in time since it only has 6k on it. The 18/24 mpg is a best scenario. I do get similar results to most of you, but I'm not that dissatified. You would be happy if you compare vehicles with BMW, MB, Infiniti...etc. After all, we are not doing too bad. Enjoy your nice ride!

Lexus Test Driver
I guess I am their case study. I get exactly what Lexus says. I am not a lead foot and I do try to coast as much as possible. Beats the V-8 truck based SUV I came from.
Love the RX.

I guess I can get off of my wife's back about the gas mileage now. She consistently gets 16-17+ mpg and she does pure city driving. Our RX has just under 2,000 miles. I guess I wanted her to be at 19+ but now am pretty sure thats not gonna happen.
Highway has been dissappointing to me. I do the driving on our trips and haven't been able to get over 23. I drive with a very light foot and still can get to the EPA rating. Our sticker shows 19 city 25 highway.
This is still way better than the GMC Acadia. That vehicle was rated at 19 city 24 highway. In city we never got over 14 and highway was never over 21. Very dissappointed with that vehicle. I'll take the RX over it anytime.

Mileage
I live and drive in a suburban area in Florida and get about 17mpg. And I am not an old and slow Florida driver, just old. I recently drove to Indiana and back and got 24mpg averaging around 70mph and I used mid grade gas and not premium. Hope this helps to some degree. 2010 RX with 10K.

My RX350 now has a little over 14K miles. City mileage around Tucson is about 20 and highway mileage is around 24. Our freeway speed limit is 75, so much of the highway driving is near 80 mph. I tried one tank on a trip and set the cruise at 65 mph and the mileage on that tank was just over 27. Overall I'm pretty satisfied but do miss the 30+ mpg I got on my ES350. There is definately a penalty for the weight and drag increase of the SUV.
