Default Lexus Prepaid Service

We were told we could purchase a pre-paid service package for ~$1500 that would cover all services through a 36-month, 36,000 mile lease.

Does this make sense?

1k and 5k are covered.
~12k - Out of pocket 1
~18k - Out of pocket 2
~24k - Out of pocket 3
~30k - Out of pocket 4
Turn car in before 36k

Am I looking at this right? Are the ~18k and ~30k incredibly expensive services?

The only service they are supposed to do for all these intervals is:
  • Change engine oil/filter
  • Rotate tires
  • Visual inspection

I would seriously question why they are asking for ~$1500 to do this basic service.

They'll probably argue that if something major breaks down during the 36 months, then they'll cover it, but this is a Lexus. It's supposed to have great reliability.

These pre-paid service schemes never turn out good for the customer. They are great for the dealer because obviously they get a lot of money upfront, and the odds are against the car breaking down and needing major repair work. They also lock you into going to them for your service for the next three years.

for that kind of money, i'd rather go with extended warranty.

The warranty is either 36 or 48 months anyways; the car should be under bumper-to-bumper warranty over the entire 36 month lease, so repairs don't even enter the equation. This would just be for service.

I know Audi offers a $750 plan for full service for ~4 years; although Audi's only need to go in ~12 mo/10,000 miles.

Why don't you ask for the service department charge book, and compare the costs of each service?

I suppose, outside the normal oil changes, the expensive extras are brakes and 'inspect all hoses, top of fluids, replace, lubricate, etc' stuff. This is something I will have to live through in the next 3 years, so I can't offer a solid advise yet.

One other thing I have is Lexus offers a Credit Card that gives you points per each dollar spent, and gives you about $90 worth start points redeemable for service & parts or accessories.

$375 per visit for an oil change and tire rotation? Rip off!

So for my 36-mo lease, assuming it's low mileage and I don't reach 30,000 miles, my non-covered service schedule looks like:

12mo/10k: Oil/filter/rotation, replace smart key battery
18mo/15k: oil/filter/rotation, clean a/c filter, check and inspection list
24mo/20k: oil/filter/rotation, replace smart key battery
30mo/25k: oil/filter/rotation

Meaning the 15k is the only 'major' service; I recall the larger services being ~$400 on our RX330. Oil changes are what, ~$100-120?

Oil changes are $80-90 with Mobil-1 at a Toyota dealer using a genuine Toyota filter. The A/C filter is all of $30 to replace. The smart key battery will set you back a whopping $2 for a pack of 2-4 units. A tire rotation is free to $20, depending on dealer/indy/location.

They are greedy, oil change/rotate tire cost $100 at dealer but $50 at none dealer place. 60k is a big service for most car.

Its a lease, you dont need to do the full inspection every 5000 miles, just do the oil and filter changes and you will be all set.
