Default 2008 RX Trunk Self Closing on Opening Problem

Does anyone here have this problem? If I open the trunk with the button or remote, it will open up and then will self close down. If I open without power (manually lift the back up), then it won't close. Anyone has any idea what caused this? Thanks.

The RX is known to have weak struts. When the struts are going bad the motor for the automatic function will think that there is an obstruction and then close itself. I would try replacing the struts and see if that works. Worst case, you can return the struts. Struts are a heck of a lot cheaper than replacing the motor.

Thank you for the tips. I had tried WB40 before but it didnt help. What do people use to lube them? I may try to replace them if it doesnt work. Thanks.

Normal WD-40 is not a lubricant. WD = water displacement.

You are looking for a silicone spray. WD-40 does have a silicone spray product, will say so on the label. Liquid Wrench has a bit of an odor to it. I like Permatex products and CRC works as well.

If you need new lifts:

FWIW, I still have the originals on my 2004 RX330 and they work without problem, even in the cold winters in PA when I am up there. When they start to go you are more likely to notice in cold weather as they are less efficient in lower temps.

Thanks for the tips and link. I'll try the CRC to see if it works. If not, I'll order the struts. I'm in a hot state. It's so hot that when we first moved here, the heat actually melted the rubber cover of the button It makes me wonder if Lexus uses different parts on their cars for different regions since my GS (got it here) doesn't seem to be bothered by the heat.

No, there are only two points of production for the RX (Japan and Canada) for those sold here in the US and they get the same parts no matter where they are sold. The rear hatch switch is a known problem here at CL.
