Default HVAC blower not working

Hi,

I have a 2004 RX330 and the HVAC blower has been acting up the past couple of months. It would sometimes turn on and sometimes wouldn't. When it's not working, I would try to press low, medium, or high but the blower still doesn't respond. There were times when I first start the car, the blower wouldn't turn on but after 15 to 20 minutes, it would suddenly turn on.

Now, since this weekend, the blower wouldn't turn on anymore. I've tried looking at the fuses (both the inside and the one under the hood) but they're both ok.

Anyone have any suggestions before I give in and bring it to the stealer...er...dealership?

Thanks,
Norm

Yup, that's the first thing I did. I removed the fuses and even check them on a tester just to be sure. Both fuses for the blower (inside and under the hood) are okay. Can't be sure of any wires though. The blower controls are on the lcd screen.

Could it be something to do with the very cold ambient temps you guys have been getting in the US?
I remember reading somewhere that if the ambient temp is below 0c then the HVAC doesn't operate...or maybe that's only the AC compressor part of the system.

If it's not the temps, then I wonder if there are some other fail-safes that stop it running? Maybe an object blocking the fan rotation?

cheers

Btw, I can only dream of those temps as I sit here downunder in midsummer!

Blower it self is probably bad, not that hard to replace.
You might as well consider replacing the interior cabin air filter while you're in there.

(Try banging on it)

satz, I'm in Vegas and it's been a fairly mild winter for us here. I do feel bad for those in the other states though. I will dismantle the glove box tomorrow and check the blower motor for debris. Now that you mentioned it, I do remember hearing like something touching the fan. Maybe that thing finally lodged itself and totally stopped the blower?

Saltynutz, funny, I did try banging on the dashboard a bit but I hesitated banging it any stronger when I remembered that the passenger airbag is just there. I'll check the blower tomorrow. Need to google how to get to it though. I remember changing the cabin filter once and the blower should just be around the same place - I think.
