Default Canadians driving in Florida

Hello Fellow Canadians,
I was reading an article yesterday and it indicates that all international drivers including Canadians are required to have a driving permit. It's available at CAA and costs $25. I thought I would give everyone the heads up as a lot of us are hoping to leave winter for some warm water diving.

It will not be enforced. The article has been updated and includes information on why the problem in the first place.

The fact that it will not be enforced still means there will be the hassle of being stopped in Florida for document checks with an out of state marker. Driving to Florida is long but this will make it longer. The law can't be amended for a while since the Florida legislator does not re-convene till mid-march. This is great for traveling tourist with reading week and march break right around the corner.

I think you are overreacting. There are no procedures to pull over anyone with Canadian nor out of state plates to check for documents while here in FL. You have to be doing something wrong to get pulled over. Once you pass the border and any checkpoint to get into the States you should be fine. The systems there will automatically be taking your picture to compare against wanted criminals and will scan your license plate for necessary background information. That is all at the federal level. Guess someone here in our legislature just got a bit concerned that someone from Quebec might try to sneak down to Florida with a French language driver's license.

If you do come down you are more likely to get caught by one of our shiny new red light cameras in FL. They just send you a ticket with photo in the mail. But, do be careful when on our roads as the state police and local sheriffs have been using motorcycle patrols plus a number of unmarked vehicles and many have been upgrading their fleets to new Dodge Chargers, for example.

There must be a dozen Canadians living on my street. None have been stopped by the police nor do I believe they will be as this law would not stand up in court. Most of my law enforcement friends have more on their plate than to stop a driver because they have Canadian plates.

To all you Canuks thinking of fleeing the arctic cold, come on down, we love you guys. We are currently enjoying a cool spell, only 71° today.

RE: Red Light Cameras... A FL state house panel just passed a bill (HB4011) to ban them. It could be the beginning of the end for these blinding flashers. http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/...-lights-cities
