Shelf life of oil

You should be good. As long as you keep them lid tight, a year will not affect it.

From the folks at Pennzoil
"Oil shelf life varies depending on storage conditions. Under normal home garage storage conditions, you can expect a minimum storage life of five years."

As with any oil that sits for a period of time, shake the bottle real well before putting it in your car. Sometimes the additives disperse.

Expiration is for human/pet consumption. Bacteria and other microbial stuff can grow and survive in water. And the container material can leach into the water.
For engine oil, I am willing to bet the container would deform and spring a leak before the contents become un-usable. Covered container would keep the dust out and the only unknown part is the life of various detergents (additives). It took millions of years for the dino oil to be formed.
