Steering Column groaning/creaking
I have some sort of mild groaning/creaking/rubbing problem within the steering column. I always feel it in the steering wheel when I'm accelerating from a stop as the body is torqueing backwards (I am now starting to feel it also when torqueing foward when braking). I've taken it to the dealership once already, and all they did if fiddle with the motor mounts and said they had minimized the issue. However, I am still having the same issue. Anyone have any ideas. I was hoping to be able to point them in the right direction next time I get it serviced. Thanks!

It seems you have 2 issues which may or may not be related.
Torque steer (TS): For a FWD it is a design feature. FWD has its advantages, but TS is something the enthusiasts hate. Each brand/model exhibits this and depending on the sensitivity of the driver, it can be acceptable or very annoying. Some enthusiasts will only buy RWD.
Creak/groan/rub: Look for clearance (really the lack of it) of the steering wheel and the stalk (stationary part of the column). Based on your model you may have steering adjustment option (so try different settings). A while back some one had to lube the exit point of the steering link (where the shaft exists the cabin .. way down under). Use a silicone lubricant which is safe for rubber.
Hope it helps.

Good point! Is the source of the sound from inside the cabin?

Well, I hear/feel it in the steering wheel, but it seems like its coming from the shaft area. This morning I actually reached down below the dashboard and put my hand on the metal part of the steering shaft and could feel the groaning in the shaft when I began to accelerate. Didn't mention this the first time, but the sound is relatively mild (when this first started, you could only feel it). But the feel is definitely noticable and very annoying. Also, I don't feel it as much when I'm making turns, unless I really accelerate hard. Its usually just from straight take-offs as the body flexs back.
