I just looked up "Boglehead". No, I am not. Interesting site, though. My background is Finance - investment banking, then Fund management, and now I just manage my money and that of certain others. All along, offering help in analyzing, structuring and completing various transactions/ "deals". You?

Bogleheads follow the smart, low cost, long term investing wisdom of John Bogle, the inventor of the first index fund. Also the founder of Vanguard. Dr. Wm. Bernstein, the author who you referenced, is closely aligned with John Bogle and his followers. It sounds like a religion, but it's really about smart investing. Check this out.

I agree we've gotten off topic. But a little plug for smart investing, with no profit motive, is a good thing. Anyway, I'll stick to my 89 octane cheaper-than-93-octane gasoline!!!

Default Nope

Unless your regular is an (evil) ethanol blend and your premiun is not an ethanol blend (and your tank was empty when you put the premium in), what you describe CANNOT be a consequence of using premium. The BTU content of the two fuels is identical. Premium will have higher octane and if you have a high comprerssion engine that you are flogging, it will perform better than it would with regular with the ignition timing "bumping off" the knock sensor. Premium may also have a better detergent package, but you would have to have a pretty dirty engine (from bad regular use) for that to make a difference and it would not happen as quickly as you describe.

What you describe cannot happen. Sorry.

The read out going down read 21 mpg`s, now that my friends, is why I use Premium fuel. Not much difference in power, but a definite difference in mpg`s. BTW, they only put regular fuel in their vehicles. They leave it up to the customer to decide which fuel to use.

Sure it can, and it does. I dont know what year you have, but run three tanks of regular, and do the mpg math. Then run three tanks of premium, and again do the mpg math. I`m willing to bet you will see better mpg`s. How much is another story, but their will be a plus to it. Oh,and all of our fuel here has that crappy-*** Ethanol junk in it. Also, this isnt the first time I have done this with their loaners. I Always put premium fuel in their loaner vehicles. Mostly because I want to see if their is any difference. Long story short, their always is. Hey, if your satisfied using Regular fuel, thats your choice. I`m not trying to talk anyone into anything. These are just my personal observances.

Those are considered premium fuel only, IMO. From all indications they really do not like regular fuel.

That's an understatement. It started long before the '12 RXs came out.

I preferred 89 octane in my 300 and 330. Both ran fine for the time I drove them, five and six years respectively. The 450h gets premium only which is 93 octane around here.
