Wheel Bearing Replacement, Dealer or Local Shop?

You could do it yourself for less than $200 if you access to a press or have a hub shark/ HF equivalent. http://www.harborfreight.com/fwd-fro...ers-66829.html

It is not part of preventive maintenance. If you develop a problem then get it fixed.

There is really no average set limit on how long wheel bearings last.

i have, but not on a lexus. I've done it on a subaru and bmw. Others claim you can do it on the car but i opted in both situations to pull the whole knuckle off and put in a vice, and use a breaker bar to get started with the HF kit. If you have a press, the bearing cups in the kits would be handy.

it wasnt hard after i could tell that the bearing cup was centered straight and i started it with the breaker bar and socket. Once i was sure i used my electric impact gun. I think starting it is the tough part since there is rust right up on the edge of the bearing and knuckle. Tolerances are very tight so you have to be dead centered. Well worth the try with the HF kit since their return policy is 30 days. If it works for you, then you could possibly get rid of your press.
