So here's an update:

Over the weekend, I swapped the speed sensors and cleaned as many grounds as I could find. By this time, I would say that the shifting was 90% of normal. The only real problem was the 2-3 shift was rough and a little delayed.

I took it to the transmission shop that had been recommended to me this morning. He took it for a test drive and said that it was very similar to the shifting problems he is having with his 2000 RX with AWD and 134k miles (essentially an identical car). He bought the car because the transmission had to be replaced. With a freshly remanufactured transmission, his car was exhibiting the 2-3 rough shift. He reset the computer with his ODB II scanner. It didn't solve the problem. He then sent his computer down to LA to have it rebuild. That solved his problem for about 3 months and then the symptoms returned. So he is in the midst of trying to figure out basically the same problem I am having. He thinks its an electronic/computer issue and not a mechanical issue. He didn't charge me and asked me to call back in a few days to check in and see how his progress is going.

That's great news, and its really great to have a contact like that, but on the way home it started to not shift again!!!! Even though the levels and smell of the transmission fluid is fine, I want to take a look at the filter and make sure it's not obstructed. That's my next step. I'm also going to do some research into it possibly being a computer issue.

Thanks for your input everyone!

I was told that a damaged ECU could be responsible for shifting problems. There are companies that rebuild ECUs such as the one above. Shifting issues is listed as a possible symptom for a bad ECU. Do you think this service is total bunk?
