Default Navigation - External system not connected

Hello. I've had a navigation in my 2001 Rx300 AWD sitting in the trunk (where it belongs) in ' not working' condition for almost a year now, and I've finally decided to post about it. Well, the navigation box basically gives me no power. So on the screen, all I can view is gas mileage and cruising range. If I click map or any other buttons the navigation unit uses, it'll tell me "External system not connected".
I'm guessing the navigation unit is out, but how? Could it be water damaged? Would a shop be able to fix it up?
I went to the dealer and he quotes me $1000 for another one, without even looking at my unit.

I recently bought a used rx300 2003 model, if I try to view anything other than the radio or the petrol consumption info I get the same message as you - "external system not connected." There was no history with the car when I bought it, so I don't even know what I am supposed to have in terms of the external system. I assumed that I just had to buy a disk and put it in the cd changer and 'bob's your Uncle,' is there supposed to be something in the car I am not aware of?
