A/C Compressor Seal Leak
I have had a slow leak in the A/C system. One year ago, I recharged it, put sealant in and put dye in it. It lasted until the beginning of the summer this year. Recharged it again in May. Now it's about lost it's cooling capacity.
So I took it to a shop and they determined that the only place they could see the dye leaking was around the A/C Compressor seal. They gave me an estimate for a evac & fill, new compressor (499), and new dryer-- total $899. But also said that I could just keep recharging it, if wanted.
Any suggestions on getting that compressor seal to seal? Or otherwise? Thank you.

Some seals you can get to re-seal but I've never seen a compressor seal that could be resealed. It is under a constant pressure of anywhere from 30-100 lbs. even when it's not on because refrigerant is temperature sensitive. In hot weather in slow traffic it could be as high as 250 lbs. and that's just too much of a challenge for a seal that is worn.

Nothing wrong with a rebuiult if it's a reputable rebuilder.... but there's the problem, where do you find one??? Don't ask the guys behind the counter of your local PB, Zone, etc., etc. because they're all gonna tell you, "no, we don't really have any problem with 'em". Very few GOOD rebuilders of anything any more because most all are using cheap Chinese junk parts to do the rebuilding. You can buy a new aftermarket one, but also very much an unknown, probably also from China or some 3rd world country. Depending on whether there is anything else wrong, you could remove it yourself and find an A/C guy who would do it on the side for a few bucks. You don't HAVE to rebuild it, you can just have a seal put in. They are a little tricky for a novice and may require a special tool. My DIL's '99 RX is still going strong on the original charge even at 170 K mi.
