COLD weather transmission whine (AWD)
Who has it? I searched and found a couple instances but looking too see if this is actually common. When weather is about 30 degrees or less my AWD trans has a high pitch whine at the top of 2nd gear for about the first min or two of driving. Trans seems to shift fine though and no noise once warmed up. Have done 3 drain and fills in the last few months.

When cold (not warmed up) the engine rpms and gear selection is shifted to higher rotation speed. This can produce more whine.
As long you stay below 3krpm till temp gauge reaches normal, there should not be loud whine.

I used to have a whine (very slight, barely noticeable) when using Toyota Type-IV ATF (not synthetic), but after switching to Castrol Multi-Vehicle ATF (synthetic blend), it has absolutely no whine.
I agree though, It's just the way toyota designed it.

Ive done 3 drain and fills. First time i used Coastal Multi-vehicle Synthetic blend, then Supertech multi-vehicle (started noticing the whine more) then Toyota t-iv and now its even louder... but its also 10 degrees outside!

It's only making the noise because it's not warmed up yet! The synthetic flows better, which is why it makes less noise (it warms up quicker).
It's normal though, so no worries.

Guess im not too impressed that a 38k vehicle does this normally cause its not warm... As long as im not having to drop the engine in 10 degree weather to replace the $1700 trans i shouldnt be complaining just yet
