Lets bring the discussion into reality.

Problems are:
1. CEL
2. Oil leak (most definitely from rear oil seal).
3. Loss of coolant (could be as simple as topping up).
4. Exhaust leak

And lets not forget 170k on odo.

I can understand the wish of owners to have a transmission last more than 170k, but in this case it seems the transmission is still holding up.

I would say fix the CEL.
Weld the exhaust leak if you dont want to replace it.
Monitor the oil loss and weigh the price to fix the oil seal vs what you get for selling the RX.
If you decide to fix the oil seal, consider additional cost or overhauling the transmission.

I am still waiting to see some one post number of # fail and # sold.

Or is it? If this RX was purchased used, there is a good chance the trans has already been replaced. Hopefully with the updated parts so future failure is not so much of a concern.

I noticed the Lexus was leaking oil today, went to valvoline and the guys there let me go look at it in the pit. They showed me where it was leaking from the rear seal and another spot in the transmission. Its been 2k miles since my last oil change and they had to add 3 quarts. Last week I looked at the coolant level and it was below "low", so I filled that up. Also, the flex pipe is leaking and checked the codes, and P0171 and P0330 showed up. Goody. Any advice?
I have no idea why people are inferring there is a transmission problem.

I don't think anyone inferred that LeGit SaaB has a transmission problem. Edbro just commented about the inevitable transmission replacement that a large number of 99 and 00 RXs eventually require.
My first trans comment had to do with the trans not shifting into overdrive due to the P0330 code. Nothing to do with the trans itself having a problem.
My second trans comment was merely suggesting that a RX with 173K might have already had the trans replaced/rebuilt with upgraded parts so the inevitable replacement may be a non-issue at this point.

That gives new meaning to the term aberration!

No transmission problems? How about before you bought it. Do you know the history?

Are you implying that if he put a $4k transmission in it that he would have no other repair costs in another 150k mi.? That is ludicrous. In a lifetime in the automotive field, I can tell you for a fact, the more miles you run up, the greater your chances are of needing repair work that will eventually exceed the value of the vehicle. It is the exception that you get high miles out of a vehicle without ending up a money pit, not the rule. I have worked on them my whole life and when they start nickel and dimeing, I move on, it's not likely to stop. If your going to gamble (I don't), Vegas is probably a better place to do it.
