Thanks. I also wonder if new, replacement trannys are built better than the originals. My 99 RX is at the dealers right now getting a new tranny. I'm wondering if I'll be replacing that one in another 90K.

They dont rebuild them at the dealer, but maybe you could ask them if their rebuilder uses the new heavier planetary gears...It would probably blow them away that you know something that most of their customers dont know...Heck print out a picture of the gear and show them the post.

I would say they already have lied, everyone that has experienced the failure gets a rebuilt, remanufactured, whatever you want to call it. Hope you got some assistance from them for the cost. Many have expecially if they had all service done at the dealership... The price varies from $1800 to $5000. some have have had only to pay labor ($1800) If it is still under warranty, then no cost... good luck my friend..have a great day.

As Lenore says, unless something has changed, they have lied to you about that and I can guarantee they will lie to you about other things too. Go even to an online Lexus or Toyota site and see if you can buy a new transmission.

My impression has been that if you go the dealer they SWAP transmissions instead of rebuilding it on site. So if any one asks "would the transmission be rebuilt" the answer should be NO. If the question is is, would I get a rebuilt one, [my understanding .. which can be wrong is] yes.

The find is very interesting (Any 6gear pictures?).
So for all the people who had their transmission re-built, did they get the original 4 gear Aluminum, or the upgraded steel 6 gear? What does the parts dept sell for repairs and if it is the new one, what date did they switch?

Dont know, i found some transmission sites online, maybe i will give them a call and ask if their planetary gear set has the steel carrier and six gears....
You hit it on the head, the dealer says your getting a new transmission but in todays world that means they didnt rebuild it, someone else did and the dealer gets the rebuilt unit which is sold as new remanufactured. all word games for rebuilt transmission.
