HELP! Just purchased CPO RX350- think I have odometer issues
I just purchased a 2011 CPO RX350 today and something is scaring me. I didn't think this was an issue when I first saw it but now that I have access to the service records, its clear to me something doesn't add up. I bought it from a Autonation dealer so I have a 3 day/150 mile return period so hopefully that leaves me with some recourse.
As you know, Lexus reports when it does maintenance to carfax, both the date and the mileage. Everything checks out except 1 date - 9/20/13. When I check the service history provided by Lexus, the reported mileage is 27692 on 9/20/13. However on 4/17/13, there was another maintenance noted the mileage reported is 31324. So between 4/17 and 9/20, there is a discrepancy of about 4k miles.
So my question is, is this legal? I feel that there was a deliberate attempt to cover up the mileage inconsistencies. Had I known in advance, I would've passed on this car. Hopefully I can still return it. Additionally, is Lexus even able to sell such a car?
Thanks in advance.

Additionaly it doesn't make sense for fraud at 4K miles… 40 K yes, 4K no

It's probably just an entry error by the service writer at the dealership. I'm not sure what it would take to change the mileage on the instrument cluster but I imagine it would be extremely difficult to pull off. If it's possible at all. It's not like the "old days" where you could wind back the odometer.

Same opinion here. Sounds to me like a typo on the data entry. I wouldn't worry, just enjoy your new ride.

As others have stated a 4K variance is likely an entry error by a previous service advisor.
Only way to verify what's on the car is have the dealer scan the CPU. It will indicate actual mileage.

A tech that's even mildly dyslexic can enter the ODO numbers incorrectly. It's happened to me.
I'm guessing the high ODO number is the error and the low numbers are more accurate. I would look at the yearly averages to get an approximate number for your current mileage. Hope this helps.

As to your question of Legality; it would be illegal if done intentionally and not disclosed. However like others have said it's likely an error. Like Dave said, it's a small discrepancy so most likely it's an 'oops ' by the technician. Unless you have serious concerns with more information I'd put on a grin and drive happily .

Agree with this. Also check for abnormal wear on the pedals, steering wheel, and seats. You should only notice some superficial crack lines on the bottom left side seat cushion of the driver's seat for 30k miles. If you think there's a problem, post pics for feedback.
