Mileage for an oil change & how much oil does your RX burn?
So the owner's manual says burning oil is normal. I've never seen that blurb in a toyota OM before.
The porsche OM for my 996 says that burning oil is normal.
Ok, so how much oil does your RX330 burn? and how many miles on the engine?
Lastly, I had put 5-30 redline oil in, and it was black at 2700 miles on it. Yes I changed the filter too. I am wondering what increment do you guys change your oil and filter. 4500? 5000? 7500?
I usually change the oil (always synthetic) at 4500 miles. I have motorcycles as well, and the oil in the bikes doesn't get dirty till 3k miles, and that's with a slipper clutch.
TIA.

I change my oil every 5000 miles in the Lexus. I have an RX350. I also have a Toyota Highlander that has the 3300 (but it burns regular grade gas). I used to change it every 3500 miles, but the technician commented that every time I brought it in the oil looked like it was just changed, very clean. Now I change it every 5000 miles. I use Synthetic blend in both cars.
As for burning oil, I haven't paid much attention to that aspect but whenever I check it, it's always above the "add" line so I would say both cars burn less than a quart.
The RX has 73500 on the clock and the Highlander has 126000 on the clock.
For what it's worth, my mechanic changes the oil, I don't take either car to one of those quick oil change places. He did not recommend using full Synthetic in the 3300 engine. He actually preferred the synthetic blend and it cost less. Of course, I change the filter every oil change.

I have a 2009RX350, 50,000 miles. I used synthetic oil (Mob 1 5W30) until a couple of years ago, when my Lexus dealer finally conceded that Lexus had authorized the use of the Toyota 0W20 synthetic in that engine. I would change about every 5000 miles (because of warranty) , and now change about every 6000 miles, the amount I drive this car in about nine-ten months - the Toyota oil is said to last ten months or 10,000 miles. The oil is never below the half-way (between 'add' and 'full") mark on the dipstick, and it always looks clean.
I was told, but did not verify, that the Toyota oil is a Mob 1 oil with extra additives. Seems like a very good oil.

I am still trying to decide what to do with my new to me 07 RX350. I was thinking of going 10k with a high quality full synthetic. But this discussion - seeing all of you running shorter OCI's, now I'm questioning that.
That said, numbafree if you have a 330, I might go with a 5k OCI on a full synthetic. It is a really good engine but I would want to avoid buildup and that interval seems like it should work well to avoid that.
I think with oil burn you may just have to see what your individual RX does. With synthetic it should be a little less but having to add a 1/2 q or a bit more over an oci may actually be a good thing as long as its predictable.

^ I agree that an analysis would be the best, most scientific way to go. And I do know that engines, although built the same, other variables vary, like oil burning.
To be honest, I've never had a Japanese engine burn oil. my beater 1996 rav4, 232k, stick, doesn't burn oil. My previous track car, 06 miata, 5-20 oil, literally drove the eff out of that car, street and track, 132k (got t boned at high speed), didn't burn a drop of oil.
996 - depending on how hard I drive it burns some oil, 6-10 oz.
If I change the oil on the RX330 at 3k miles, just gonna put mobil1 in, full synthetic.
The RX is so popular, I am curious what interval and oil everyone else does/uses.

I've only done one oil change since I bought my 07 350 in March. Normally I change the oil at 5K intervals, but this one ended up being at about 8K miles because I was on a road trip vacation and didn't realize how many miles I would be putting on the car.
The Lexus dealer where I bought the car at had put a sticker on the window saying the oil change should be done at what amounted to 5K miles and that was pretty much when the MAINT REQ light came on.
As an interesting side note, when I changed the oil, I drained approx 7 1/2 quarts of oil out.

Both of our 04 RX330s do not burn a drop of oil. One is at 143,000 miles, the other at 89,000. Full syn 5W30 changed somewhere between 5-6,000 miles with an OE Toyota filter.
The owners manual calls for 7,500 mile intervals. This is one of the best engines made that we have in our RXs

175k miles on my RX330 with the original engine and no oil burning issues. Did burn about 1 quart every 10k miles when I switched from having the dealership change the oil (using conventional oil) to fully synthetic Mobil 5W-30 when I started changing the oil myself. Other than that, everything's running smoothly without any issues.
