Default RX330 and 10,000 mile service question

My RX330 is due for it's 10,000 mile service and the Lexus dealer wants $451 to perform that service. When checking the service manual the only things really required are an oil change and tire rotation.

Is there a better way, such as going to a Toyota dealer and getting that taken care of for a fraction of the price?

Thanks

A Toyota dealer can do the work, although some won't because Toyota corporate decided a while back that Toyota dealers are not allowed to order Lexus-only parts. Check with your Toyota dealer. That shouldn't be an issue with routine maintenance, as Lexus products share the powertrain with other Toyota products. It only matters if the mechanic breaks something while working on the car.

Also, know that you should not just ask for "the 10,000 mile service". Dealers, *especially Lexus dealers*, excel at adding unnecessary things to boost the profitability of the service interval. That also makes it harder to compare the price quoted by two or more dealers. When you get a number, ask them exactly what that includes. (Note that "inspect" is very different from "replace" or "change"!) As you've noticed, the dealer's service probably includes more than the book says you need. Don't be afraid to ask for a new price by itemizing the stuff in the book.

You're correct, when calling my dealer and requesting an oil change and tire rotation she said "Oh, I see you're due for your 10,000 mile service". I replied, "no, the manual states that all I need is an oil change and tire rotation.' She didn't sound very pleased but set up the appointment.

I'll be cancelling it this week but would like suggestions on who to take it to. I hate getting blatantly ripped off, it's a pet peeve of mine.

I find this hard to believe. When i call for service i state it needs the 5k service or 10k service and it runs me about $90 and they follow the instructions of the service manual. I would find another dealer or sit down and find out why they are charging you so much, because their isn't much to the 10k service.

yeah i would try another dealer. they all vary on what constitutes 10k service. my 5k intervals (non-15k "intermediate" services) are generally about $135. i think it's just rotation, oil, top fluids, check pressure and tread life, brake pad wear, and then a car wash.

i'm ok w/ the price. another local dealer takes more than $200 for the same thing.

I agree with the others. At least find out from that dealer what they are planning on doing for this so callled 10K service. If they can justify the price to you it might be okay. Otherwise just get what is needed and called for. If they are just doing and oil change and rotating the tires forget it. Do it yourself for $35.

My bad, received wrong info, 10,000 mile service is $140, not $451. $451 was the next service total printed on my 5k receipt, after reading these messages called my dealer and was quoted $140, oil change, tire rotation, top off fluids, etc.
