Lexus RX300 (advice on whether to buy)
I currently own a 95 lexus sc300. I am currently on 210K miles and running strong. Only thing I've changed recently was the clutch. Great condition and will never sell this baby.
My wife and I now have added another baby to the family. She is driving around in a beater that is falling apart. I have some interest in getting an RX300.
I found one online for sale. It is a 99 lexus rx300 with 130k miles. The price is 4500. Is this to good to be true? Looks like it has been taking care of and will check it out myself. Was hoping to get some advice.
Is this a reliable car? I have heard that rx's have transmission problems. Is this true? Also how is the mpg on this one? Does it only take premium as well? My SC only takes premium.
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Our 99 RX300 has been a delight. Virtually nothing has needed attention since we got it in 2001. It runs on regular gas. You will see about 19mpg overall. We only have 125,000mi on it and I would never let it go for the money you are looking at. Great car.

The RX300 is not a particularly popular car (at least not in my neck of the woods). So prices are depressed. $4500 is about right for an AWD car that has been dealership maintained (ie by-the-book). Not many of these around.
The RX has definitely had its share of problems, the main one being the transmission. Cars that were not maintained regularly also had the engine sludge problem (the extended, goodwill warranty for which has long-since expired). If you're a good mechanic, you can probably take car of the others (timing belt, cam seals, engine seals, idlers, water pump, fuel/air supply metering, exhaust, HVAC servos, etc) but the transmission is usually the biggie.
Be sure to get it inspected by a knowledgeable Lexus independent if to decide to move ahead.
EDIT: And if you do buy it, DO NOT flush the transmission! Drain and refill only.

fuel consumption
we have 2002 RX coach edition, it's reliable SUV but one thing we don't like is poor gas mileage, rx300 fuel consumption more than mine 2008 Toyota Sienna (3.5L engine ) .
