Oxygen sensors were replaced a couple of years ago but I realize they could still be going bad.


I've been having the same problem. First set of brakes (F & R) lasted 106,000 miles. The second set lasted only 40,000miles (looks like they were wearing unevenly so might have had a sticky caliper/slide). Just had both the front and rears replaced again so let's see if this helps.

Well, Son on a Gun! I had the F and R brakes done this morning and my mileage is back up to 21mpg!

Who'd a' thunk???

Sweet! Were the old brakes dragging, maybe the caliper pins were stuck a little.

Not sure if it was the pins or pistons but they cleaned and lubed the pins so we shall see what we shall see!

How can you tell if your brakes are dragging or not?

Im only getting 14mpg on my 1999 AWD.

Front is 6 months old and the rear needs to get changed soon so yeah

You need to know how free your vehicle rolls/coasts?

On an open flat road, put the vehicle in "N". Lightly put your foot on the brake and sense the change.

Set the display to instant MPG and observe, how often you see 100mpg as you let off the gas.

Chock all wheels and put the transmission in "N". Lift each wheel and see how easy or hard it is to spin the wheel. Note, the FWD will have a slight drag on the fronts and AWD will have a slight drag on all.

I went downhill on N letting go of the brakes and acceleration and the instant mpg read 100mpg.

Is that good or bad?

I feel like my brakes are bad because I have to put more pressure on the brake pedal than usual when slowing down from a high speed ... what could be causing this sir?

Lets worry about one thing at a time .. this thread is mpg (and possible drag).

Depending on slope, did you start accelerating? If brakes are dragging then you would be slowing down.

Are your hub area getting excessively warm? Slight radiation from the disc is OK specially right after coming to a stop.

You should see 100mpg on flat road when you lift your foot off the gas ... [gas to idle is the fuel and distance is based on wheel rotation]

Incidentally, do you have standard wheels and tires?

Normal 225 tires. I will report back later when I return back from the gym since my commute back consists of multiple downhill roads.

Just so that I get this clear:

1.) Go on a downhill slope.
2.) Put car into neutral.
3.) Let go off the gas pedal.
4.) Observe if car is slowing down or not?
5.) Look at the instant mpg and see if it reports back as 100mpg or not?
