Default Differential Service Interval?

How often should the fluid be changed in the rear diff (open rear end)? I got an email from the dealer regarding 60k service and they were calling for the rear diff fluid to be changed and the transfer case fluid "inspected". I would think it is the other way around, fresh in the transfer case and the rear end when ever you get to it.

Both should be changed out at the same time. This fluid can go up to 100K, but I don't recommend that at all. About every 30K or so is when I would be changing it out, but every 60K or so is fine for a daily driver. When you do this, please make sure you use a synthetic, preferably a 75W90 such as Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple or Mobil 1. I am currently using a Pennzoil synthetic I obtained in Mexico due to lack of availability of the other fluids and will let it run for a year to see how it turns out.

BTW, for everyone, this only applies to those of you with AWD vehicles, https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=214000

By the book it's lifetime fluid. Not looking to debate that, just telling you what Lexus says. I have over 130K on mine with no plans of changing it.

You might not notice much either doing it that way. Where I saw the difference after changing it was between the 2nd and 3rd gear changeover. Was a bit smoother and the gear changeover seemed quicker.

That's more in line with what I was thinking too. I already did the transfer case at about 55k and it was in pretty good shape. Your post about the stinky eggs was messing with my head. I'll just do the rear end in a few months.

They also said something about lubricating the drive shaft or axles. Any idea what that would be?

Since I have a FWD my comment here is general ... They talk about it, but I have not seen grease nipples in a long time. The union are sealed.

Where are you getting the "drive shaft lubrication" requirement from? I never remember seeing anything about it.

I had come across this (I believe)in the maintenance schedule, or some where in the owners manual packet. But I could not find what they were talking about.

Are you sure you are looking at the RX300 maintenance schedule?

"re-torquing drive shaft bolts" is one thing. The RX requires that and it is in the maintenance schedule. "lubrication of the drive shaft" is another thing. It's not listed under maintenance for the RX so you shouldn't expect to see any grease fittings. Maybe you were looking at the LX 470 which shares the maintenance book with the RX.
