Default Rear spoiler install dilemma

Hello All,

My RC did not come with factory installed rear spoiler.. so I bought one separately and it just arrived.. and now I am debating whether I should drill on or not drill on for installation..
My RC is a lease.. and I don't plan on keeping it beyond my lease term.. so should I go through the hassle and drill and install? or just cut-off the screw part and install with 3m only that came pre-installed on the spoiler? I mean i know 3m will be strong enough to keep the spoiler on but can't decide..

If the spoiler has the 3M VHB tape on it I can tell you once installed it won't come off. I use the VHB to hold my front and rear license plates in place on my Vette. The only way to get it off would be with a heat gun. Or a chisel and hammer.

Make sure you properly prepare the area first before installing.

My thought is that since it's a lease, don't drill it. The 3M should be plenty strong. This way, if they raise any issue upon return, the leftover residue can be removed with 3M adhesive remover.

Just installed it with 3M that spoiler already came with. Looks great!

I just cut off the bolts and used the tape. It is on there solid and isn't coming off. It's been on there for three months

When it comes time to remove it. Use dental floss. Place between spoiler and deck lid. Then use a sawing action to separate it. The left over residue can be removed with 3M adhesive remover found at any Wally World.

I'm in the same situation and purchased the OEM one from the Lexus dealer on ebay. It's good to hear that the tape alone was strong enough. What are you guys using to remove/cut the bolts?

I just used a pair of pliers to work the bolt back and forth until it snapped off. Then used my Dremel tool to grind off the edges. They came off pretty easy.

Why not just drill the holes and install it the way it was intended? Drills are not difficult to use and neither are drill templates.

I would use a Dremel with a cut off wheel. The wheel is about 1" in diameter or about. Works well and not expensive. This will give you an accurate, clean and quick cut.
Any force applied in a twisting or bending motion could crack and stress the entire wing.

I just used a plier to cut bolts off, used the dremel to grind the edges, then install with tapes on the spoiler.
took 5 minutes.

Although the VHB tape is strong and may hold the spoiler in place there is the chance that it might not and the effort to remove the bolts are more difficult than the effort to drill the holes. I hope it is not your intention to remove the spoiler and sell it? Drill the holes like onewheat said and make it easy on yourself.

I agree 100%, drill the holes and make it look right. Eventually the tape will get weak, and you'll lose the spoiler on the highway. If that happens and it hits someone you'll be held responsible for their damage.
