The aftermarket intakes increase the flow of air being sucked into the throttle body. This is mainly due to the aftermarket piping being smooth compared to the ridged OEM piping. The reason for the ridged OEM piping is to reduce noise. It works similarly to how a resonator in an exhaust system works.
The minimal increase in air flow should increase MPG, but it is very marginal, and further reduced by the fact that the filter sits in the engine bay, where it will mostly be sucking in warm air instead of the more dense cold air. These types of intakes (Takeda/aFe, Injen, K&N) will be the loudest, but the F-Sport and Joe Z should yield the better MPG results. Also, I think the F-Sport intake also uses a thinner filter, which would further increase air flow.

I don't follow this idea at all.
If the MAF reads more air coming in it will cause the ECU to inject more fuel- likewise the IAT sensor knows how hot or cold the air is and adjusts fuel accordingly... mileage shouldn't change at all from an intake on a modern car unless there's a leak in the system someplace.
If the maker of the car could've improved mileage with a "bigger" intake the car would've come with one to increase fleet CAFE numbers.

That's just how I understood it. If it's wrong, then it's wrong. Actually now that I think about it, the increase in MPG from changing out the intake probably doesn't exist, because you're right, the car's systems should read the changes in temp/flow (if any) and adjust accordingly.

How the OP got 5 more MPG by swapping intakes is beyond me, because thats not possible by simply switching intakes on our cars.
