I've used several filters on this car, K&N, Wix (Napa), Mobil 1, and Purolator. My favorite so far is the purolator. I do used oil analysis (UOA, from Blackstone Labs) and the PureOne filters turn in excellent results, the same as the wix and M1 filters but it costs 5 dollars. Nice price and it's readily available. The PureOne filters have a rough surface all around them, easy to get on and off. Also the failure rate on Purolator filters is exceedingly low and I like their silicone anti-drain back valve design. I'm not saying that M1 or Wix are worse, they are all top shelf products, IMO.
The benefit to running this larger oil filter is that because the filter media is so huge, the by-pass valve (which opens according to a pressure differential between the dirty and clean sides of the media) doesn't open as often, so basically 100% of your oil gets filtered all the time. The amount of oil this filter can clean is huge because it's media is huge. It also helps with oil pressure, just a bit. Running a large oil filter can also extend oil drain intervals. It also gives me more peace of mind, knowing that the filter can probably handle, say, 15K miles but I change it at about half that and do an oil analysis. Doing 3K changes is a waste of money and oil, IMO. This engine has gone 14K miles on Valvoline SynPower 5w-30 and the UOA has come back excellent, in fact the oil was still fit for service with all wear indicators and TBN exceptionally good, but I had already changed it.

i wonder why wouldnt toyota had come up with this idea, i know my landcruiser too uses the same filter also and is also bigger and oem. i know this is off topic and i apologize, yet did you know that the toyota previa 91-97 uses the same tranny used in the 95-97 ls400 WOW, i had a previa with 998k miles and the original motor finally went out, and still had the original tranny WOW !Go yota!

Yup. They will send you a free kit. It's 22 dollars for the analysis. They give lots of info. I like Blackstone because they will give you a nice paragraph detailing the results of the analysis they just did. You want to take the sample of oil when it's warm, after a drive. When you are changing your oil, let the oil run out for a few seconds, then take the sample. The idea is to get oil from the "middle", not the top or the bottom.

The ten dollars will give you TBN, which is Total Base Number. Think of this as the acid-neutralization additive in your oil. Getting the TBN is used for extended drains. It's not normally needed unless you are doing 12-15K+ oil changes. I normally do mine once a year just to check for problems. Several people I know do theirs every oil change, but I do not.
