Noise in power steering adjustment
My steering wheel is starting to make a noise on the in-out and up-down motion. Anyone experience this? I suspect that it's probably in need of some lubrication. Anyone know how to get to it and if so, what type of greese to use?
If I can't figure it out, I'm going to turn off the auto adjust feature so it just stays where I set it.
Model is a 1998 GS400

This is notoriously well known for '98 GS's. Do a search and you'll find loads of info. Long story short, it really can't be 'fixed'. I had my mechanic grease it up w/ some grease ( I dunno what grease it was ) but it helped a little. Still does it in hot, humid weather but if you got the AC pumping and it's cold inside ur cabin, it really doesn't make any noise. Mine doesn't anyway, only when I ride around w/out AC and the inside cabin is hot. Oh yea, and I hate that squealy pig sound too!

Well, that could explain it because it only does it in the summer. I'm in Arizona and it has been hot, but it usually doesn't do it until it starts getting humid, which it is now.
I tried searching and didn't find much, but i'll try again.
Thanks!

I think I have it fixed... at least for now.
I tore in to it and the noise appears to be gone, at least for now. going on 4 days now and no noise. I thought I would share what I did.
I removed the 3 screws on the plastic around the column. There is one under the column and 2 on the front (turn wheel 90deg both directions and you will see the screws). It took some work to get it around the joystick.
Once removed there were 3 places that moved. One large tube that adjusted the in and out and one small screw drive that did the up and down. I cleaned the greese off the large shaft and re loaded it with fresh white litium grease. I then removed the cover (2 small screws) that the small screw shaft goes in to. Cleaned out all grease and reloaded it. There was one other small gear that you will see that I also greased.
Worked it a few times and it doesn't make any noise. Also moves faster and smoother.
Hope that helps.
