Default our stock w58 5spd tranny

hey guys, im about to do a motor swap but was wondering about the power potential of our w58 tranny. I have done a search but didnt come up with the specific answers that i was looking for.

I know that the J series motors bolt up to the w58 5spd tranny, but how much power can they hold even if i rebuild the entire thing such as gear box, ACT clutch, rings, seals etc... basically rebuild the entire tranny with new parts and a stronger clutch.

Do you guys think i should just dump the stock 5pd and swap it out as well? any input would be great. thanx!

i've seen our tranny's hold 450+ but thats not mashing through the gears and punishing it. as long as you don't destroy your tranny when you shift you should be fine up to at least 400. i plan on keeping my 5speed when i do my swap untill i shatter some gears... then i'll swap it to a 6 speed.

anyone know what gives out on the W58 when too much power is added?? ... syncros just can't handle it?
\or are internal parts actually bent/broke

thanx for the great info guys!

right now my car just reached 185K... yes i drive a lot. So this is why im asking about the tranny rebuild. Now that i know it can hold up to 450 hp, should i go for the rebuild?

If it isn't broke, don't fix it. When you pull the tranny to do a clutch swap (because you are going to have to anyway) ... take it to a shop and pay them a few $ to look over it.

Supposedly 2nd gear fails in the W58. I'm not sure if the teeth just come off or a shaft shears, or what.

I know a guy with a later model Supra.. swapped NA-TT and left in the W58. Apparently it is slightly stronger than many of the other W58s kicking around (possibly stronger than the SC3's?). Anyway, he drags it, doesn't push that much power through, but hard launches. Has gone through about 3 boxes now I think. Always breaks 2nd I believe.

Now he is adding power and looking for a R154. Like mine
