Default Just found a W55 in my garage

From an '86 2wd 22RE pickup. I could have sworn it was a G series, so I never gave it a second look for the 4+ years it's been sitting there. I'd need a shifter to make it fit in the SC and that's about it.

Now I'm having bad thoughts about a W swap behind the 1UZ. Run the W55 for a while until (if) it breaks, then go from there. Really would like to get a manual in the car soon so I can fully enjoy some HPDE track days, maybe even this year.

Hmm....

Asha'man, based on the year, truck model and engine type that should indeed be a W55 transmission. Even in factory IS300 5-speeds some people reported having some issues (which I have to assume involved very aggressive driving or attempts to use it with a turbo kit).

I'm not sure how long it will hold up against your 1UZ, especially if you take it to the track. The W55 has an aluminum sandwich plate unlike the 92-97 W58's which had steel sandwich plates and other very minor internal changes..

Maynanator, PM sent.

Yeah, that's the only thing I'm worried about, is the strength of the transmission. I ran across a few things that suggest the truck W55's are actually stronger than the IS ones, and it sounds like most of the IS ones break with boost, but it's still in the back of my mind. At this elevation, I'd be shocked if my 1UZ made more than 180rwhp or so, and I do not abuse transmissions, but it's still a heavy car and could put quite a bit of strain on the tranny.

I need to get my wheel and exhaust situation dialed in, but it's still something to think about.

strength wise they are as strong as the w58 boxes and is300 boxes, I think the is300 guys just have bad luck. there was talk about that box being weaker but no ones really confirmed anything I think most W boxes are the same, it was the G series boxes they were experimenting with every year on those trucks and they do look very similar.

by the time the w55 came out it was all ironed out. lots of people have put 1uz and 2jz swaps behind them in trucks, they hold what a w58 does more or less, unless you have it in 4wd then it will hold less.
I wouldn't hesitate putting one behind a 1uz, but behind a turbo 2jz you would have to limit the boost. a n/a 2jz all day long.
people were even running them with 350 chevy swaps but at that point the r150f was a better bet.
edit* I mentioned the gearing the I realized that only applies to the w56 which comes in 2wd or 4wd, forgot the w55 was only 2wd with the right gearing for a regular car. the w56 has a different first gear which is annoying in a car.
rest is probably just working out the shifter length. all w series transmission have the same input shaft length which is pretty neat.

That's kinda what I was thinking, that it'll be fine behind a 1UZ. I think the ratios are maybe a little low, although I'll have to look into it, but that's easily solvable with a different rear end. And if I do manage to kill it, I'll just have to track down a 58 or go JZ/R154 and the chassis will already be ready for a manual.

The one thing I'm gonna need is a tripod shifter assembly. I know the R154 can be extended by cutting and welding, but I think the W5x is a little more elaborate. Have not looked into it, though, so I could be wrong. Anyone have a tripod/swan shifter assembly they'd like to part with?
