budget single turbo advice
Hey everyone need some advice on which path i should take i can get a 1jz with a holset 1hc for $1200 or i was going to buy a 1j from a company that sells them near my location comes with harness, auto trans, etc for about the same price i have a harness and trans already but my current 1j is dead so all i really need is the engine....would the first option be worth it with the single turbo? I was going to go single anyway just not sure what setup to pick, not looking for a lot of power maybe 450-500hp

You spend $400 on a "turbo kit", you'll get what you pay for....which may be a blown motor.

^^^^^^^^^ Well put.. Nuff said... Do it right or don't do it at all. If you don't have enough money to do it right the first time or will have the funds to put in it when things break, then don't do the swap/turbo kit. If you have 2K saved now, save 4K just for misc. items that you might need or run into. Less time the car is down, and more time enjoying that you did it right the first time. This is my thinking. Don't just throw something in there just to hear it run. You are only asking for trouble later on.

You have a few options with stock or modified stock hardware:
Stock turbos with a 3inch or bigger y pipe with full exhaust. Would recommend a 4.5 inch Y pipe from Down Under and replace turbo side cold and hot pipes.
There is a guy in the US who rebuilds the stock turbos with steel wheels in the $1200 price range.
I know this is not a common path but just under 400whp with response better or similar to the GT30 range and a little more top end.

What do you have in terms of parts?
You can build your own kit with all brand name and quality parts w/o breaking the bank.
Buy you own manifold, S360, Turbosmart or Tial Wg and Bov, Oil lines from Vibrant or Hydrolic shop can make you some, 3" dp from ebay same with the manifold and you are done.
I've built plenty of cars like that!! make the same power if not more than the Brand name kits out there.

That being said I do have a generic kit and I wish I had a better turbo now I will have to upgrade it = more time and money.
I say go with the new motor and twins unless you have seen the single turbo one running and its in good shape, then that one.

This. All of us who have seen it enough times now know its better to go this way spend a little extra time, save a little bit of money, and end up with good items you want instead of a generic kit.
