Loud Taps At Cold Start Ups - 95 SC300
Hi guys,
Ever since I got the car, at every cold start up there would be tapping/ metallic rattling noises under the hood for the first two seconds. It goes away once my red oil lamp indicator goes off. After that, no metallic sound.
I'm going to have the timing belt done soon and wondering if I should the shop look into this. First time starting the car up when the outisde temps has reached 40s, its louder...

Don't think it's any of the pulleys but I'll make sure. I'll record a small video as well, maybe a few at different outside temperatures after the engine temperature matches it.
The previous owner advised me about the minor oil pan gasket leak, so he used 10W-30 conventional and that is what is in it. I changed the oil this past Saturday before Hurricane Sandy. Didn't notice any metallic flakes, just darkened oil. Oil filter looked fine.
I had in mind to put in 5W-30 which is what I love most, especially synthetic. I may fill it with 5W-30 after I lose some oil just to see what happens. Or otherwise drain and change the whole oil.
Could it be the oil filters design as well? Just a thought. The previous owner has a Bosch filter on there, and I just so happen bought the same thing. I usually use Mobil1 filters or Purolator.

Then I would guess the oil pump may need replacing if the pressure is not coming up fast enough which it sounds like this may be the case.
Personally I run the german castrol 0w30 which is about the best on the market today and has been proven over and over plus as soon as you turn the key the pressure is there.

Here's the video. I cheaped out on the vid quality so it's not in the big MB or GB sizes... But the specific sound will be at 0:18 to 0:20. Right when the engine fires you'll hear the sound. Then by 0:20 you'll hear the sound change. At the same time, red oil lamp light goes off. Anything after 0:20 is the engine itself just being noisy which quiets down by a lot when it gets a bit warm. Car has almost 270k miles, what you expect?
The temperature outside is roughly low 40's F, may be lower since they're expecting some flurries and rain.

So far I think its coming from the top end. I haven't got anyone else to start the engine for me while I stand outside over the engine yet. A member on here whom I PM told me the valve designs like on the 2JZ rarely ever needs adjusting, told me he worked on valves for more than 30 years. My other friend has said it may also be the valves as well.
I guess i really won't know for sure unless i take it to a shop, let it sit until cold and have them hear it...
