The picture above is not what my car looks like. I have a 2000 SC300 and there is no canister like the one pictured above. In the meantime I still cannot fill my tank.

I finally fixed the problem with my gas tank. All I had to do was take my air compressor and give a blast to the little air tube near the top of the filler. I filled the tank yesterday with no problems at all.

I thought maybe the end of the filler spout can be popped off along with the spring door, but either those little pressure tabs are super snug (I tried prying and gently hammering) or they're welded on. Inspecting them closely, they sure look welded.
Taking the rubber gasket off that surrounds the filler mouth doesn't reveal anything to work with.
I had hoped to check for obstructions in case that's keeping the tank from venting properly...

I have THE EXACT same problem. I have a 2000 SC as well. I am going to try to clean the rubber gasket around the filler neck. I just stripped the false walls out of the back of the car and will let you guys know what I find if you are still having the issue. I am not sure whats going on, but I cannot fill the tank normally. I have to trickle the gas in the tank (and no, its not full at all). I smell gas fumes as well in the car.
If anyone has come up with a method to solves this, let me know. I also took the cap off and did not see anywhere to blow compressed air.
