Default starter slow to disengage when cold

Ive noticed the past few mornings that my 92 SC400 will be a little slow to start. When it does fire up, the starter seems slow to retract as there is a sort or grinding/whirring noise momentarily afterwards. Not a belt squeal, its definitely the starter. Is this necessarily the starter itself thats to blame or something else? After work when i go to drive home the car starts perfectly.

its perhaps the starter. I had a similar problem when my starter gave out and then finally worked. After that, a grinding noise would always appear when i crank it. took the starter out and replaced a oem one. Fixed my awful/dreadful problem

You should have the battery tested, you could have low voltage that could cause both problems.
