Default Unplugged MAF = More torque, gas, fun 92-94

How many people have realized that their 400 runs better without the MAF connected? I myself have, and so have two fellow 400'ers. We don't know why it is the way it is, but it is certainly faster without the MAF. The feeling is no placebo effect either. The torque is completely lacking with it plugged in.

If you have never done it, give it a try and vote.

MAY ONLY APPLY TO 92-94

I tried it today... actually spun a bit of 2nd gear, I could not believe it. I cannot wait to standalone this thing.

Edited: I think this trick may only apply to 92-94 because the other models might not even run with no maf.

I have a 1995 sc400. Maf is going out because I cleaned it with MAF cleaner and may have not let it dry enough. A surprising amount of dirt came out of it when I cleaned it. It was getting so bad i couldn't 3/4 the pedal because it would bog out. Just pulled the maf plug and it runs great now. Most power I've felt and no hesitation but still going to put the maf i got coming (wit 39k miles) on it.

Hmm...Maybe it isn't only 92-94.

Our (me and two friends) MAF sensors are fine. That is the weird thing. I'm thinking that there is possibly a faulty signal from the 02 sensors when the maf is plugged in, and of course the O2 signal is ignored when the maf is unplugged. That is complete speculation, though. Perhaps the harness has been affected by 17 years of hell? As soon as the car warms up with sensors connected, it becomes slow. Never seen a car that runs so well, much less better, without a MAF.

let my car warm up. turned it off. unplugged cable from maf. turned on. trac off light came on and check engine light came on. flipped on the pwr accel switch. boy it is waaay more responsive. touching the gas pedal you can tell it just wants to go. exhaust smelled funny kinda like it was leaning out and then trying to adjust. after it adjusted it is definitely chuck full of torque! so weird. plugged it back in with the car off. turned it back on and it was so slow compared to before when it was plugged in :-(

edit: oh and i have a 92 and when it was unplugged it ate my gas alive! lol

I spoke with someone who did that to his old ls400 and he said the effect wears out after 20-30 mins of driving

Doesn't the BFI mod also eliminate the MAF? If yes then boy, I'm going to do the BFI mod soon. I hate how my Auto SC400 sometimes doesn't feel like a V8.

You need to read about BFI more..has nothing to do with the MAF.

Can you explain more detail on how it ate the gas alive? lol Basically you went through a tank in 1 day or what>? Driving like a beast>?

No one seems to be clear on long term affects here and/or how it affects MPG? Can anyone shed light on this?

1st gear is what limits the 400s power. soooo slow off the line, i remember someone unplugging a connector on the trans so it could shift more aggressively. i think its in the susp forum.

^^We have manuals.

The effect definitely does not wear off after 20-30 minutes. I do pull my efi fuse every couple weeks for shlits and giggles to make sure it doesn't adapt or something. As for gas, yyyea it uses more, but it's totally worth it to me. I could see the o2 sensors getting fouled out after using this for a long time, but if you unplug the maf, then you aren't using them anyways, right?
