Default Supra belt tensioner dampener: Who is running one?

Any of you manual, GTE swapped guys running a Supra belt tensioner dampener? If you aren't, have you had any issues with belt retention during high rpm shifts? I kinda forgot about that until today, but I don't want to order one if I really don't need it...

I am running an R154 but i am not using one on my car, one of my budddy has it on his GTE 6speed Sc and he told me that he doesn't feel or see any difference with or W/o it.
Did alot of pulls in car and i didn't have any issues with the belt.

Can it work on a 1jz or just a 2jz?

Edit-- didn't see the date on this thread.

driver88, it should be 2JZ only. 1JZ-GTE's with factory R154's never came with them.

you also have to have the right kind of tensioner to bolt it onto gte's have it and manual IS300's have it also I think

^^ It is a different tensioner than GE engines have. On the GTE tensioner there are two bolt holes to mount the damper arm. There is also a small lower bracket that goes near the A/C compressor I believe.

It goes from the serpentine belt tensioner to the oil pump, it bolts up to the oil pump and Yes the IS300 comes with one.

^^ I did not know this. Thank you for clearing that up. Also bodes well for prolonged parts availability. So it was standard only on M/T IS300 models?

Thanks! One last thing I just want to clarify because I will be doing this: I have read elsewhere that 92-97 early oil pumps (or at least 92-96.5 spec) do not have the mounting holes for this bracket (plus no crank sensor location). Of course the 2JZ-GTE oil pump is compatible but for those of us using a 2JZ-GE block (to avoid front seal blowout issues with the GTE pump) I only find one part number for the 2JZ-GE VVT-i used in *both* the IS300 M/T and Auto. It also appears to be the same pump specified for all 2JZ-GE's from 98-00 SC300's. P/N 15100-46091. So this suggests all GE VVT-i oil pumps have the mounting area for the damper bracket.

Sound right to you?

92-95 Don't have the provision for the Crank sensor 96-97 Does !!

You know, I was talking to my builder and he told me that it was to run a gte oil pump and the na block. Why? because it's bigger.

So just get a gte oil pump and be done, it will work just fine , I have 2 of my buddies run gte oil pump on their IS300s 650whp and 600whp for year , I just found that out a couple weeks ago.

99SC42, I've heard so much conflicting information about whether or not a GTE oil pump is okay to use on a GE block. I'm inclined to play it safe because the GTE pump does put out significantly more pressure for the piston oil squirter system which aren't present on GE's.

With all respect that's been a confusing aspect of my swap to know for sure. Lots of reading and questions but no firsthand experience. I'm not building for more than 360-400whp at most with stock equipment up top and I'm sure I won't overwhelm the oiling needs at such normal power levels.

If the Cali BAR changes their stance again, however, and I'm told I HAVE to use a GTE block then I'll just go all the way, pump and all

I would think the vvti oil pump has the hole there for it whether its a manual or automatic if the part numbers are the same. it must be the difference in the tensioner on the manual versions, not really sure on that it could also just be that the hole is there on that one too but just missing the shock, not enough vvti experience.
I do know that the complete setup came on all manual is300's so it should not be hard to replicate with tie right diagram. I would use the same shock/tensioner/oil pump combo though so all gte or all vvti so the parts def match up.

Ali, from what I have found I believe part numbers for the tensioner, bracket, arm and shock are all the same between the MKIV TT M/T and the IS300 M/T. I think you're right that all VVT-i oil pumps have the mounting holes there regardless of the transmission application. The only difference should be in choosing a TT oil pump or NA VVT-i pump.
