Default How do I know if I need a new ECU?

Guys I am going through automotive hell.

My lexus started giving me problems starting up and threw out a code 41 "tps".

I replaced the tps and now the problem is still going on.

My mechanic thinks I need a new computer but he also says it is hard to say forsure.

Is there a way to tell if the computer needs replacing?

Ive already wasted over $300.00 on an unecessary repair.

This problem has been going on for weeks(trouble starting-stalling-weak revs)

Thanks guys!!!!

Please help!!!!!!!

Not sure myself how to troubleshoot an ECU issue.

I thought that mine might have been bad, but the issue seemed to have simply gone away on its own.

I had purchased a used ECU from eBay for $140, and never ended up using it.

If you do end up needing one, ive got a 92' SC400 AUTO ECU that ill do $100 shipped.

drive your car to the Toyota dealership, pay the $49.95 to have them check your car with their scan tool. they will tell you if its bad right away.

problem half solved.

One good way to check to see if you have a bad ecu is to pull it and check the Capacitors. To do this disconnect the battery, of course, and then disconnect your ecu. There are four screws on either side of the ecu. Once you take off the outer covers you will be able to see the board. Pry up the board very carefully and look at the other side, you will need to look at the capacitors. The capacitors are cylinders sticking up on the board.
Many early 90's Toyota and Lexus computers will "pop" these capacitors. Check for brown, yellow, or clear fluid coming from the bottom of the cylinder. It will leak out on the board and cause all sorts of crazy problems.
If you have any questions or want me to look at pics of your board just send me a pm. Hope this helps.

Bad capacitors won't always be that obvious- here's a good example:

The easiest one to stop is in the right picture- the middle capacitor. That's a blown cap. Hard to spot, but if that top is not perfectly flat the cap is blown.

Of course if it looks like this it's obvious:

Hope this helps your inspection

the easiest way to check would be to swap in a known good one if you know someone with the same car or could find a good one cheap. ECU's "usually" dont go bad but s*** happens. I hope you get it figured out.

Guys I really appreciate the help.

I am a new member here and so far everyone ive spoke to has been happy to lend advice and help, this is a great site.

Aside from that This problem has been killing me. Two weeks now it has been going on.

Ive broke down and booked an appointment to get the problem diagnosed at lexus dealer.

I wish I would of done this from the start instead of wasting time, money and labour trying to solve the problem on my own.

Anyways you live and learn I guess.

I hope it is just a simple sensor or something.

I am surprise that with only 140 000 kilometres on my car I am having such problems.

Anyways thanks again guys !!!!!!!!

That is not exactly correct. It is hard enough to diagnose computer problem on OBDII compliant vehicle, on OBD I there is no easy way. Charge you quote represents simple diagnostic fee, usually one flat hour (my last shop charged $98 for flat hour). With new TPS in comp has to be back-probed or v-bobed for signal to determine if wiring from sensor is OK, after that check with known good comp. That is electrical diagnostics that take some time and money.

Not millage but actual age is important to determine electrical or electronic system vulnerability. Usually due to material aging and deterioration
