Default Change Water Pump on SC 400 without messing with the timing belt

Is it possible to change my water pump without touching the timing belt?

I looked at the forum and found very useful article, but nowhere specifies my question.

Thank you.

you have to remove the timing belt to get to the water pump. so you might aswell replace it. or reuse it if its in good condition or just replaced resently.

Timing belt is 30 bucks man. Don't be cheap, replace it along with other seals. It will save you the headache down the road

Well in the front of the engine, you have the crank seals and cam seals. People should replace those during the 90k service (timing belt water pump etc). That is how it is for our SC300s so I assume the same parts are accessible during the timing belt replacement on the SC400s as well. I might be wrong.

A lot of times people replace the belt and don't replace the water only to get screwed over when they have a messed up water pump or a leaking cam seal at, say, 130k miles. Do it at once and save the headache. Cardinal Rule: Maintenance over Mods

I have replaced mine on my 400 once and its alot of time and patience. You will be glad you did it while you are in there. I would also flush the coolant, change plugs, wires, and and three of the seals while you're there. Heres a perfect link for the 400.. Let us know how it goes. Its for the LS400 but same principle. Good Luck... To get the crank pulley off, I would slide a 22mm socket with the longest ratchet I could find, then slide a very long piece of pipe over the ratchet, and wedge it under the drivers side frame of the car, then BUMP the starter, DO NOT crank it... Then will loosen the crank pulley like butter!

Hmmm and i thought there was nothing harder than installing a starter on the Sc400. lol

Still for some reason it doesnt look that bad to me. Just super time consuming

Thank for everyone input. I was wondering if the water pump was only serpentine belt driven therefore replace for an hour or so, but I guess I will have to run all the 10 yards.

Thanks

I just recently did this on my LS400. It is very time consuming but as far as hard labor I have been up against worse. You are right this is the best way to get the crank shaft pulley off. It worked great! Be prepared to spend some cash though. I get discounts at my local store and still spent over 400 bucks on items that were shot when I dug in there. Pulleys will most likely need to be replaced gaskets and things. Way worth it though!

lexls. tutorial info is good stuff. I ran into a problem. Step 33, my crankshaft does not have any white mark to start with. It have a " U " ingraved in the metal. I have a pic posted in the performance and maintenance section. should i use this to set the timing or should this mark be at 12, 3, or 6 o'clock.
