Default Fixin to have to do the starter, tips

`IVE DONE PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING ELSE , TRANSMISSION,TIMING BELT, WATERPUMP, REAREND SWAP. BUT NEVER DONE A STARTER, AND YES I KNOW WHERE THEY ARE. I HAVE A 98 SC400 VVT-i. TO ME IT LOOKS EASER THAN IF I HAD THE OTHER MOTOR 92-97 BUT I KNOW THERE IS GOING TO BE SOME SUPRISES. SO THAT BEING SAID, ANYONE DONE A 98-00 SC4 STARTER? JUST LOOKING FOR SOME GOOD TIPS, DONT NEED A STEP BY STEP MANUEL, LOL. THANKS FOR YALLS HELP.

I did a R&R on a LX (SUV) once, I left the throttle body on the intake manifold & just removed it from the heads after removing all the wire connectors from the injectors & etc. Set the intake aside then removed the starter, wasn't that bad a job really, dealer & other shops wanted $1200 to $1500 including a rebuilt starter.
Take your OEM starter to a alt./starter rebuild shop & have it rebuilt, brushes & contacts, (tell them what a pain it is to get to & you want them replaced)
get a intake gasket, clean mounting surfaces real good & replace.
Keep your OEM starter in use, they're far superior to the parts store rebuilt replacement starters & alternators.

There are some great "how to's" on here and over at lextreme.com. Those guys are awesome, and tons of help. I have done it three times myself, it's not that big of a deal to do as long as you have enough mechanical aptitude to open up a pair of pliers, and follow directions you will do fine. Plus you can save that extra money you would have spent on other mods.

Best of luck.

WELL GOTTER DONE. LOL, YOU KNOW IT REALLY WAS NOT AS BAD AS I THOUGHT IS WAS GOING TO BE. THE LINK THAT spooledx2 SENT WAS VERY USEFUL, HAD GOOD PICS AND REALLY LET YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WERE GETTING INTO. I HAVE A TIP FOR PEOPLE DOING THAT JOB. IF YOU HAVE 2 PEOPLE DOING THE JOB, THEN AFTER YOU GET THE INTAKE MANIFOLD OFF, YOU CAN GET TO THE STARTER BOLTS FROM UNDER THE CAR, BY USING SEVERAL 3/8 EXTENSIONS YOU NEED ABOUT 3FT, A 3/8 SWIVEL AND A SHORT & DEEP 14mm SOCKET. DEEP FOR THE DRIVER SIDE & SHALLOW FOR THE PASSENGER. THATS WHAT I DID ANYWAY THE DEEP MAY WORK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, IF YOU HAVE THE CORRECT LENGTH YOU RATCHET SHOULD BE RIGHT AT THE REAR TRANNY MOUNT. HAVE THE TOP PERSON GUIDE YOU ON THE BOLT BREAK IT LOOSE. THEN YOUR HALF WAY HOME. THIS WAS MY FIRST TIME STARTED @ 11:00PM FINISHED @ 3:00AM. I THINK I COULD SHAVE OFF AN HOUR OR 2.

Glad it helped man. It's not as bad as some people say it is, but none the less a annoying job to have to do. I am sure there is a engineer sitting in a dark room laughing his *** off every time someone has to do it. Besides that awesome motor.....

Tip:
GET A FLEX HEAD RATCHETING WRENCH.

I'm stuck on that part because I REFUSE to pay 30 dollars for ONE wrench.
Also, be patient.
It's not as hard as it's being portrayed.

I picked one up at NAPA for $14.00, best investment I made for the R&R.
