Default Is this a good idea when motor swapping?

I was thinking about firing my 1jz motor off soon as I get it in the car before the radiator or intercooler piping is routed just to make sure it doesn't have any issues.

Does this make sense?

Thanks,
Ryan

You can do that. Just don't let it run too long or you risk siezing up your water pump. Anything less than a couple of min should be fine though.

I can go ahead and install the radiator and then fire it up...mainly I'd like to know that it runs before I spend anytime on the IC piping.

I only have until Feb 18th on the startup warranty.

I always test a motor (less the tranny) prior completing the full engine bay assembly. I test it with oil, only, mainly to determine engine health and oil leaks. You can buy a mini serpentine belt that slips over the crank pulley, tensioner, and alternator, only; obviously, you'll want to bypass the water pump, AC compressor, and PS pump.

Be sure to bolt up the flywheel using all the FW bolts; otherwise, oil will leak through the bolt holes in the crank defeating the purpose of the test.

You can run it a minute or two without coolant from a cold start, and that should be enough time to check oil pressure and any oil leaks. Once the motor is off, you can perform a compression and/or leak-down test.
