I have heard of this. From what I have read recently, the Pontiac Solstice uses an iteration of the R154 as well. While I would expect these transmissions to be largely similar internally, I would expect the peripheral aspects of the transmissions to be very different: bellhousing, input shaft, shifter location, etc.

The R series transmission was definitely a truck trans before it was in the Supra, Soarer, and Chaser. The R150, R151, and R155 (each used exclusively in he truck line) were equipped with much significantly shorter gear ratios for more towing torque and increased highway rpm while towing. The R154 was for passenger cars like the Supra, Soarer, and Chaser. It was less aggressively geares so as not to rev at 3k on the highway.

The Google knows everything!

The Jeep/Dodge AX15 5-speed, the Jeep NV3550 5-speed, the Toyota
R150F & R151F, the 87-92 Toyota Supra Turbo R154 and the Isuzu AR5
5-speed all share the same case to bellhousing bolt pattern. As such
there are a number of possibilities that can be had when a 5-speed
is desired:

I hope you guys understand that different R154s are built differently. I own several different cars including the MKIII and MKIV Supra. Both of the Supra have the now infamous R154 trannys (out of a Soarer for the MKIV) and they're definitely built differently. I'm not talking about just the visual aspect. The Soarer R154 is more robust then the MKIII R154, keeping that in mind, even IF the Isuzu came with the R154 tranny it might not be the best bang for the buck.

hmm, yea im sure they have a diffrent gear ratio cuz its in a truck right now... but dont think it be to hard to change the gear ratios inside that housing.. Sounds like a project to me but if could save couple hundred cuz i have my own tranny already that be sick. The w4d and frame is bent already in it so dont care.

Same reason why the 3040LE Toyota Auto transmissions can be found in great variations from NA engine to TT 2Js along with V6 and V8 Toyota motors and most of them are built differently aswell as bolt up to completely different blocks and rated at different HP.
