Default What the heck is that?

Sry guys, i might be asking something stupid, but i've never seen one of these before and just wondering what it is, cus they sure look cool. I know the car isn't an sc300, but this seemed like the best forum to put it in, anyways take a look, please don't get frustrated if the answer's obvious.
Oh, and i'm referring to the weird purple things mounted on the side of the turbos.

tha would be the air horn. it is used to have a smoother inlet for air into the turbo. no filters on this thing.

i searched "turbo funnel" on google images and this came up

http://www.sephiaricstore.com/images/hksfunnel.jpg

i don't understand the air horn thing, was that a joke or ...
i mean what would create the noise, the turbo, is it just suppost to amplify your turbo sound for the rice heads, ??

Also wouldn't not having a filter cause worries about crap getting in the engine

i think i saw some others called velocity stacks, and another site said they were called bellmouths

he was being sarcastic. think of it as a filterless whirlwind intake.

It is just a funnel, there are no fans (not that I've ever seen). I've seen these "velocity stacks" as well, they are very common on Individual Throttle Bodies. I read on Honda-Tech that they helped, but I can't access that forum on this network so I can't bring up the thread.

ITB's are pretty popular on the front intake K series engines swapped into numerous Honda vehicles. Here is a link to a throttle body setup, these particular ones are called "Full radius air horns".

Velocity stacks allow for a smooth transition from the outside air into the piping. They also use the venturi effect in that as the air enters the horn it speeds up the air and starts to swirl the air, thus allowing for the air to flow into the turbo easier.

The geometry of the velocity stack allows air to more smoothly transition its way into the turbo inlet as the air is being sucked toward it. It is the equivalent of a 360-degree, omnidirectional mandrel bend for the intake.

i wasnt being sarcastic in my terminology of "air horn". its called either the velocity stack or the air horn. velocity stack is just a more specific "technical" term.
