Default Question for those with 1JZ swaps in Cali

this isn't a where to get smogged thread at all. I'm curious what do you exactly do for smog though. no specifics, just wondering how everyone skirts the legality of it. i was interested in this swap to breathe some new life into my SC but the whole smog thing complicates things a lot.

again no specifics, just wondering what people did

IIRC its illegal to swap in an engine that is older than the car. Therefore the car wouldn't pass visual inspection

There is only one way around it and you probably already know. I've heard that you can get the 1JZ to pass the sniffer, but not visual as the 1JZ was never sold in the US, and is not certified. In either case you need to find a "friendly" smog shop and be prepared to spend some cash.

When it comes time for me to smog mine again, I'm gonna slap a couple cats on there and tune it to pass. The only "gray" area is NOx...the 1JZ doesn't have EGR and will have high NOx no matter what. One easy way to combat this is to retard the timing, thus lowering combustion temps and dropping NOx. This will throw CO and HC off (HC reduction is through high combustion temps) but a pair of good cats and the ability to trim the AF ratio can get past this.

If you look, a lot that do the swap have cars that are older than 95. Its easier to find engines that are a year younger than the car. The guys with 92s are especially lucky, since they can pretty much grab any 1JZ except for 91s.

Since you have a 98, its gonna be difficult finding a engine of the same year or newer than your car. So yeh, find a "friendly shop".
