SC300 5spd worth it?
Is searching and purchasing a SC300 5spd worth it if you are planning to NA-T or do a swap? I have read the W58 doesn't hold up that well to the higher hp and people swap it with a 6-speed anyway. Any advise would be appreciated!

TH400... or a BL built auto
Heck, they've only done sevens or eights on the thing... should last a few weeks
If you like bangin' gears, get the 5 speed... but crossing the 400-450 rwhp barrier is big bucks, even if you are NA-T'd already. The V160 and all the trimmings isn't cheap, even used.

gnats how much power are you planning to be running? Right now my goal is 300rwhp, which is easily is going to be attained with my setup. Once I put my 440cc injectors I should be good for around 400rwhp. Then I am stopping there. The 6spd v160 is a sweet swap to put into an sc300 but it can and usually is very expensive. Another alternative is the R154 tranny. They can handle more power than the w58. But they can be hard to come by.

Well this is going to be the wifes car and I will drive the 400. But I am sure it will not take me long to get the Mod Bug on the 300 due to the availability of upgrade options. A nice mid-high 12s 300 would be nice and I think a little more attainable then my 400 right now.
It is really coming down to should I spend the extra time and premium for the 5spd or just get an auto?

Building a SC300 auto to handle 500rwhp daily driven will be MUCH cheaper than turboing a 5spd sc300. imho, the auto is better for your goals. If you have endless amounts of money, buy a very expensive Getrag transmission, complete 6 speed tt rear-end, and all the necessary extra parts .

Either you want a manual or you want an auto. If you want a MT, then get the 5 spd because trying to convert an auto over is just more of a headache on an already expensive project. Personally Im not all that afraid of having to slap down $2500 on doing a V160 swap and if you're that broke then maybe its time to swap in a 1JZ and/or go buy a honda (they are much cheaper to mod).

I guess I will get more specific here. Is it not possible to swap everything from a 1jz clip including the tranny into an auto SC300? So why would it be worth searching for a ripe 5spd when there are plenty of autos out there.
I guess if you want to go the NA-T route and wanted a manual then it would work, but from what I am reading the tranny is the weakest one of the few options out there. And where not talking about a young and fresh 5spd here, it will most likely have alot of miles on it already.

You're looking at small-estimated cost of ~$6-$7,000 for an average performing proprely setup getrag transmission swap....If you find good deals.
Pay less than 1/3 of that cost and get your auto-transmission rebuilt to handle the power all day long and you don't have to turn your car into a project zoo.
If you don't mind spending the money, then the getrag is a cool thing to have. But it's not worth the price-gouging cost imho.

I've got an R154 turbo tranny with the correct bellhousing and flywheel to mate it up to a 2jz or 2jz gte motor.
$1,000 even, includes insured shipping.
