How much power can the stock 5spd tranny handle?
I've searched but couldn't come up with much. My mechanic friend just called with the good news that we could swap my SC next week in his heated dream garage at his house. Sounds good. But... I would like to go r154. I have the tranny (well I have an entire mkIII Supra I'm parting out), but my friend doesn't have the equipment to weld aluminum to do the conversion, and I won't be able to collect the remainder of the parts on time. (those that don't come on my 1JZ, stock 2JZ, or the MKIII Supra)
I had dreams of 500+ hp by spring, but that doesn't look like it will happen now. What is the max the stock 5spd is good for? Can I push 400 without a problem? Also what clutch do you guys recomended?
I can always hold on to the r154 to use whenever mine gives out... but I would rather not go through the hastle of swapping it. I'd really like to wait and get all the parts for the r154, but this looks like my only chance to get my car done by spring.
THANKS

It depends on how you drive it.
I can drive for months...maybe years with 500rwhp on the W58,but if I wanted to I could also annihilate it at 350rwhp.
Full-throttle shifts into 2nd and 3rd will usually speed up the destruction.
At these power levels, the tranny breaks down in the shifts. While in gear, you've got nothing to worry about.

SPORTcoupe said it best. its how you drive it mostly. power will kill it but not as fast as if it were from you beating on it. I've seen some pretty high numbers on the w58, i would suggest against trying to run an lsd until after u get the r154 in

Well, reliability and power-handling standpoint, it's like going from a late-model Ford motor to a 2JZ
It's night and day difference.

EDIT: I've realised now that my post prolly doesn't tell you much of what you didn't already know, so here's one detail:
W58 uses a push-type clutch, while the V160 uses a pull-type. Pull-type clutches can handle puch more power with the same material used for the disk/PP, just because of the design.
The internals of the V160 are also much much beefier.

That SC300 tranny can safely take 350whp with good shifting. I heard of guys making significantly more but they wind up breaking. If you want a solution to the gearbox, save up and get the GTE 6 Speed.

For some reason that 350whp seems to be a popular answer in my previous readings as well. Im planning on making more power then that and if I blow a W58, I guess the next one will be cryo treated before it goes in (it might actually be cryo'd and sitting on the shelf waiting). BTW, this is a fairly cheap option if you dont do the case and only do the gears/syncros sinces its like $1.50/lb. If I break that one I very well might bump up to the 6 spd, but dont really feel like spending the $2k+ (plus a clutch) for the getrag.

For example, it's common knowledge not to go over 10psi on stock compression right?
Well if you look at some recent posts on SF.com, people have been reporting 400 rwhp @ 12-15psi on stock compression. I wouldn't recommend it because it's not guaranteed at all to be safe, and you really have to know what you're doing, but it's been done.
What I'm trying to say is: Take what you read with a grain of salt. If you want real information, look for posts such as "I broke my W58" and send those people PMs asking if they know what power level they were at when they broke them and what exactly broke. It'll give you a much better idea.
Read THIS thread for some inspiration.
Cheers,
~Alan

Although dave ran his w58 with that much power, he broke it in what 2 or 3 runs? I wouldn't go by how strong a tranny is by how much it can hold with a few pulls. Besides I doubt any of us would get our tranny to hold that much hp with even 1 attempt. Dave has got to have some secret he is hiding from us, I can't get my car to run with the settings he gave me but his car ran perfectly. Quit holding out dave!
