Default Sporadic overheating and burping of coolent

Recently my car started overheating, and it wasn't overheating everytime i drive, but maybe twice a month or so. (one and a half notch above normal position)

Today, I did the 'keeping the engine on with heat at full blast while keeping the coolent cap off'
and every 30 seconds or so the car burped quite a bit of coolent out. And while it did I kept adding the coolent. What does the burping mean?

And is there anyway to know whether the water pump is good or not visually?

Thanks.

Well when you "burp" the cooling system, you're getting all the air out of it. Coolant shouldn't be coming out of the top, but the coolant level should be going down as air escapes. Keep doing this for about 10 minutes and then top off the system. Now check your coolant in the morning and it should be lower again. Top it off and keep driving around, then let it cool, top it off, drive around, let it cool, top it off. The reason for the overheating could definitly be the fact that you have air in the your cooling system

I would say your thermostat may be sticking if it just happens sporadically at random.

Thanks guys.
I'll look into replacing the thermostat.

Well, my car started overheating randomly again. And I tried the same procedure. (engine on, heat on, cap off) And I did it for 40 minutes, but the volcano-erruption-like overflow of coolent + air bubble continued in 20 second interval. Does anybody know why my car would be spitting out coolent out of the reservoir?
