How to compare Lexus and BMW maintenance cost?
Hello all,
I am very new to this forum and apogolize for my no-good English in advance. I live in San Francisco bay area and am seriously considering to buy either NX300h AWD or BMW X3/X4 xDrive 28i. With those packages I want, both car's MSRP are very close. It's about $50~51K.
MPG thing, for convenient purpose, I will just take 30 vs 20. My daily commute is like 40 miles round trip. Mostly on highway with very bad traffic. Assuming 15,000 miles per year, it's like 500 gallon vs 750 gallon. Honestly, 250 gallon diference * $3 per gallon, $750 is not really a big deal.
But I do concern on long term cost. We all know that BMW offers 4-year free maintenance. So my questions are:
1. How will NX300h cost me in the first 4 years regular maintenance assuming drive in 60,000 miles?
2. After 4 years and 60,000 miles, does anyone have ideas how to compare Lexus and BMW's serivce cost? (and I do believe Lexus has better reliability)
3. How about these 2 car's residual value?
By the way, my another choice is Nissan Murano top trim level. It's like $7K~8K cheaper than NX and X3. MPG is same as X3. So the price gap can compensate Murano MPG difference like 10 years if compare to NX300h. It's bigger and interior looks very nice. Almost all reviews on Youtube give high score on Murano. How do you think?
Note: In my home country, I had owned 2012 Toyota Prius and 2010 Murano.
So many thanks!!

My Guess-timate
Let's assume you'll need the following during your 60,000 miles on the NX:
..$400 - 4 tires @ $100 each
..$510 - synthetic oil change every 10,000 miles (6 x $85)
...$90 - replace engine air filter every 30,000 miles (2 x $45)
..$120 - replace cabin filter every 10,000 miles (6 x $20)
..$280 - replace brake fluid every 30,000 miles (2 x $140)
------
$1,400 Total
======
These are just estimates and are based on the published schedules in the NX manual (non-hybrid & non-F/Sport).
Additionally, I have no idea if BMW includes all of these items in their complementary service.

The costs to maintain is difficult to compute for several reasons:
1. Depends how much you can do yourself. The more things you can do yourself, the cheaper maintaining the car is.
2. Variation of Prices. While Lexus and BMW set standards for labors, dealerships depending on your area will change those prices.
3. Parts on the cars are not apples to apples, they will wear differently and will need to be replaced on different cycles.
Based on that, its hard to determine the cost between the 2. Overall, german cars are built to fall apart and they have amongst the highest per hour rates. I've had several friends with german cars and each visit was $1k plus and when you needed work done (brake swaps, ect) it was in the several thousands. Plus, I don't think made it more than a couple thousand miles before something broke and another grand down the drain. Lexus has one of the cheapest rates for a luxury company. Now keep in mind that most NX owners only have 5-30k miles on their cars, so we can't provide you with a maintenance number for miles none of us have reached.
Overall, if you wanna know that type of information, you're best to wait a year or more.
As for comparing those with the Nissan, its an apples and oranges comparison. The Nissan is going to be severely lower grade, many corners cut, and not even in the same realm as the Lexus and BMW. Economy brand vs. Luxury brand.
Though, I do laugh that you say you don't care about gas, yet you did a calculation on it. lmao... I've never quite understood why people look at luxury cars and yet worry about mpg. If you worry about your gas usage, you will always end up with an underpowered boring car. Your only way to avoid that is to get a Tesla

BMW:
Car + maintenance (4yrs/50k miles)=x
Lexus:
Car + 10k oil service (free) + 20k oil service (~$120) + 30k maintenance service (~ $400) + 40k oil service (~$120) +50k oil service (~$120)= y
Service doesn't include the cost of consumables other than oil and oil filter in both cases, but includes brake fluid flush for the 30k maintenance for Lexus. BMW will rape you over the coals for the 60k service (~$1200), where as Lexus won't (~$400).
Overall, the nominal cost of "free" maintenance for BMW is included in the purchase price, but if you lease., then it's an all in cost. If you owned and performed all service at the respective dealer up to 60k miles. You break even with both, even though BMW claims to provide you "free" service.
