Have driven both.
The power feels similar in both, although the GLA might be a tiny bit peppier given it's a smaller/lighter vehicle. Handling I felt was quite similar although the GLA felt a little "lower", although both drive quite car-like rather than SUV.
The NX is much roomier inside though, and the interior is definitely higher quality in the NX. The GLA shares all the interior problems that the A Class has - loose interior trim, rattles and unstable screen mount.

The GLK is probably a better comparison to the NX. The current styling isn't too contemporary (a new gen is on the way) but it's closer in size, features, pricing etc.

Didn't even drive the GLA. took wife to see it on a lot and she wasn't a fan of the height. She wanted an SUV seating height and the GLA is lower than my car when we parked next to it,
Shame because I wanted her to have some more choice in a luxury CUV but the options are dwindling. Luckily the NX has proven very impressive from our first test drive yesterday (started another thread if you are interested).
The GLA seemed much more like a small wagon aka the X1 so that was a no go for us.

^^^ Agree.
For some perspective, a GLA is 2 inches SHORTER than a Toyota Matrix. An AWD Matrix is not a CUV and thankfully Toyota is not marketing it as such.
MB calls it a CUV as it's the hot term nowadays but nowhere does it look like or act like one. It's a 5-door version of the sedan CLA (same wheelbase, interior, similar suspension, engine...). It's sized, handles, and performs like a hot hatch, with two inches more ground clearance.
This arguable classification aside, people who are in the market for a $40K CUV will cross-shop the sub-compact (GLA, X1, Q3, remotely even a Buick Encore) and compact crossover class (X3, Q5, RDX, NX, ...) as there is pricing overlap when options are considered.
To the OP, I haven't test driven the GLA but based on the reviews, the 250 drives very car-like with good power (similar to the NX 200t) and fuel efficiency but rear seating and cargo is tight as a family hauler. As for the GLA AMG, it's a rocket @ 4.8s 0-60 mph but is to be avoided as a daily driver due to the punishing ride.
