Given that it has a turbo, combined with the air/water cooled intercooler, I would like to imagine Toyota did their homework and beefed up the internals until it's only destructible by the way of a wrecking ball. It should respond very well to modifications as well, being a turbo. That being said, I've rarely heard of a luxury vehicle that's tunable. Any bets on, at minimum, whether a simple ECU retune can unlock some hidden potential?

There are aftermarket tunes available for BMW.

If the market is there tuning companies will create products.

Considering only 1 engine is available I can see a tuning company trying to add 20-30 HP via tuning.

piggyback ecu's on turbo will create a lot more than 20-30 hp... i doubt anyone will pay for that...

Not on a small 4 banger with a tiny turbo - not reliably- . 20-30 hp would be awesome on this model.

I am sure tuners will tweak it ...

My Supra added about 500hp to the wheels. Plus I'm only using one turbo now too.

here is a tuner available for some Toyota's increasing power from 230hp to about 290 hp. A product like this may work nicely with the F Sport trim.

it's a toss-up right now. My guess is the days of being able to add boost reliably (ala 2JZ-GTE) is gone. There is little incentive for Toyota to overbuild an engine for a small CUV that will spend most of its time moving grocery bags. But who knows, it might make its way into the FR-S or something sporty so maybe Toyota does have it all planned out...

its supposed to go to IS and GS and RX worldwide, head engineer already confirmed that it will have various different tunes.

You can get 300hp + if you wanted to out of it like the A45 AMG.

Problem is, how long will it last till it just pops?

And putting it in the RX is going to be a bit dumb, it doesnt have enough power to shift all the weight. Im a believer of an RX300t though!

Seriously? Truck owners do it everyday of the week. 30hp =over 10%- its still a nice jump. Toyota added a turbo to the RAV4 engine basically and got 50hp?

.... the torque number jumping would be more interesting. I'm not saying you cannot get more than 20-30hp either. I'm saying you play with fire on small engines you get burnt. 40k SUV and you turn up the wick = pretty much not gonna happen.
The good news is they are going to use this engine in more vehicles going forward. Hopefully they slide it into the CT. BTW, Lexus goal is 200k miles........avg car is 150k miles.....so the engine is tuned to deliver reliably.

Toyota engines are designed to last at least 400,000 miles... not 200k.

And they got 100hp extra from 2.0l engine

Lexus goal is a reliable 200k from the CAR- That is stated by Mr.Toyoda himself.

I have no idea what that engine got beforehand because its a completely new integrated turbo design. I completely forgot Toyota uses the 2.5l in the rav4.

I have no idea what "reliable 200k" means... their engines are designed to last 400k. I have seen plenty do well at that mark.

As to the Rav4, this is 2.0l engine... but most of it has been changed for turbo. It is a lot more advanced than regular 2.0l AR engine that goes into Rav4 in other countries.
